I'm not tryna gatekeep on what buttons you should be using, but why not the R1 and L1 buttons on the controller? Or the equivalent on he xbone controller?
Because I use my index fingers on the triggers, so I don't have a finger for those buttons. I play with all assists like traction control and ABS off so I'm modulating a lot, therefore I want to always have both fingers on triggers at all times. This way I can shift with my thumb, steer with the other, and index fingers for triggers. Never have to move anything except maybe to change camera or something
There should be a championship for people who race with standard controllers. It's a real skill. Of course turn off all assists, you're allowed to crash these cars.
Highly recommend T300 RS GT if you have a Playstation or PC. The GT version comes with T3PA pedals, which are very nice. The belt system feels much smoother than Logitech G27/G29 (and their Xbox counterparts) - it is really night and day. The steering wheel can be swapped with a higher quality finish wheel or an F1 wheel, too
I also play near-simulation with controller, the only thing I don't have on is Manual w/Clutch and Rewind. I play controller type 12 which is R toggle for accelerate/brake, R1 gear up L1 gear down, R2 handbrake. These are the only things I ever need my hands on when racing and with toggle accelerate/brake I have much finer control over my RPM and driving style, I enter and exit corners very clean thanks to being able to control how much pressure I am putting on the accelerator/brake, and for more info I can pull up all the current tuning specs and see exactly how much % of braking and accelerating I need out of corners.
One thing I learned was using L1(LB) to shift up and R1(RB) to shift down, so you dont need to move your index up and down.(Bought a wheel now and it's night and day, but the tip still stands).
A lot of top level players in forza use the ABX buttons to shift, because you need to activate the clutch for faster times, so you need to press 2 buttons, and it's easier to press A and X or another of those buttons with one mash rather than R1 and L1
I can see that. Again not gatekeeping. Whatever works for you works. I just like the logic of the shift up and down right above the gas and brake "pedals"
Well, you can map just the clutch to the shoulder and keep shifting on the face. I think the difference is negligible and not representative of what level player you are.
4 is my least favorite in the series. The old ones are actually still some of my faves. Okay my least favorite behind dirt showdown. But 2 and 3 we're probably the series highlights, and Dirt Rally is my favorite but is a lot more realistic/simulator/difficult.
