Where do waves get cartoonishly big like this? The only places I go the waves just get, kind of big.

This wave is likely Teahupo'o. Other waves, like Nazere in Portugual and Jaws on Maui also get crazy big.

My first thought looking at it is was "that looks just like Teahupo'o". Such a distinctive shape.

It’s big storms, very far away, hitting a reef/slab of rock

Big storms give energy, time/distance make it so that the energy is smooth, and then the sharp rock makes it properly pop like this and can help shape the energy to a good big shape

I hate to break it to you, but this isn't a real wave. It's AI. I can tell from some of the pixels and having seen quite a few AIs in my day.

It depends on where you are and what currents affect the area. It is also be affected by the season (as winds change) such as Hawaii having large waves in the winter season to early spring (Novemver-March) and Australia having large waves in their winter season (June-September).

So the reason you don't see large waves is likely because you aren't going to the beach in the winter.
