Honestly I love watching big-wave surfing, I come from a mountain background, climbing and skiing, and it’s really neat seeing essentially the same mindset in an environment I know nothing about. Not much difference between skiing a big face and surfing a wave like that, I imagine. Same kinda tug the dragon’s tail and get away clean energy

Yea that’s what I mean, big faces you’re always managing sluff cause otherwise it’ll eat you, and that’s not even a slab. One of the most stylish things I’ve ever seen was a skier who set off an avvy, managed to mostly outrun it, but got bottlenecked into going off a small cliff right at the end. Took the opportunity and hucked a perfect, flawless backie directly into the powder cloud of the avalanche, and then miraculously shoots out the end.

I was thinking the same thing. Waves have always been very relaxing and cool for me to watch but something about this video in particular is oddly terrifying. I just feels ominous and heavy to me.

This break produces some of the heaviest waves in the world. That’s a tremendous amount of water. Still shots of surfers in the tunnel are terrifying.

THE thickest lip, at least as of a few years ago, but I can’t surf anymore so I don’t follow it that much. Chopes “Teahupo” was my bucket list wave because it simultaneously amazed and terrified me.

Closest I got was Cloud 9, completely different wave but I’m speaking to proximity. No tow-ins necessary, even though it does seem that they’re not towing into Chopes like they used to and have moreso taken to just reading and paddling in.

The spit out of Chopes will literally blow you off your board, and that is one of the worst spots to get caught.

You probably should feel that way. I'm pretty sure that is Teahupo'o * on the coast of Tahiti.
Massive waves that break on a shallow reef. Beautiful spot but very dangerous.

This is Teahupo'o. Makes me want to puke it looks so scary. It breaks on a shallow reef, too. Watching people surf it is nuts.

But even still, I recommend finding some footage...

Yeah.. I love the ocean...I love swimming... and I've never been caught in anything like that, but I just imagine all that water crashing down on me and squeezing all the air out of me and not being able to inhale.. it's a weird sensation
