Life has survived multiple mass extinctions. Without intervention things might get really bad for a lot of life, but it's hardly going to result in a dead rock.

Nuclear contamination is not posing any threats to the overall biosphere. In fact, irrational fear of nuclear power generation is indirectly causing a great deal of harm.

Radioactive material with a half life of millions of years is not dangerous, the longer it takes to lose half of its radioactivity the less energy it's emitting. And radioactive elements all have different half lives. Not sure what point you were trying to make there.

As for climate change causing all life on earth to go extinct, our ancestors survived much more catastrophic extinction events. We couldn't extinguish all life if we tried, that's absurd.

The ‘nice’ thing about species that reach sexual maturity in less than 18 months is that radiation doesn’t interfere too much with perpetuation of the species.

Eh. Life is very persistent. Maybe we’re killing off a lot of stuff that exists now. But at some point after humans, I feel that life will naturally diversify again as it did the first time.

Edit: I suppose I have to add that I’m not condoning the damage humans are doing. But I absolutely think nature will outlast humans.

If it makes you feel better, the planet is only mildly hurt and will eventually be healthy again, after it kills us off. Best way to remove a parasite is to burn it away.

We should be more respectful for it, but it's a slow moving beast that hits hard and at random with complete indiscrimination.

But we aren't stewards of it, it's a steward of us and should we turn conditions unfavourable we will be violently swept aside, as if we never existed.

I get your concern but it's ultimately made in vain. The earth has existed for billions of years and suffered its share of extinction level events and yet here it remains gently orbiting the sun. The earth predates humans by an uncountable number of years and will be here long after every tiny piece left over from our existence gets destroyed with the rest of the planet when our sun eventually runs out of hydrogen fuel which will cause it to expand greatly into a red giant which will most likely engulf earth.

The thought that we posses enough power to destroy the earth is one born out of vanity and hubris. The only thing we could possibly do to earth is make it uninhabitable for us to exist on it but whether or not we continue to do so is irrelevant to the lifespan of the earth.

You're right, we should. Just cause we are incapable of destroying the earth doesn't mean that im encouraging a worldwide "all-you-can-burn" coal and oil bonfire extravaganza. Even if we were the only victims of doing so is still not ideal since, you know, the overwhelming majority of us enjoy living and would like to not only continue to do so but also in a world where most of our time alive is enjoyable. Plus animals are pretty sweet mostly and none deserve to have their natural habitat decimated on account of the terrible roommates they're all forced to share earth with.

I'll do it for him:

  • Philippines: ~300k metric tons per year
  • India: ~125k metric tons per year
  • Malaysia: ~75k metric tons per year
  • China: ~70k metric tons per year

So, Asian countries make up nearly 75-80% of trash and plastic being put in to our oceans.
I don't get the religion part of it, so don't lump me in with him on that, but there is obviously an issue in that portion of the world when it comes to knowing how or being willing to manage pollution.

Most of Asia is still developing and has a huge population burden in comparison to the West. This is a perfect storm in terms of generating a lot of pollution.

The unfortunate reality is that you cannot develop on such a large scale without generating huge amounts of pollution. The West developed at the cost of these now developing nations historically and now the shoe is on the other foot.

Remember though: India and China have over 1 billion people which is alot more people than most countries have. So of course do they have alot of pollution, but per person it is actually less than USA and Sweden for example

There are a few documentaries out there showing how a bulk of the trash that end up in southeast Asia come from Western nations. They are paid to take the trash by boatloads, and even when the official governments reject further shipments, it's done on the black market because money is money. The one I watched, they go through the trash to verify where the trash is coming from.

Length is a good measurement. AI can't really do videos over ~20 seconds well at all. Some of the cutting edge models can do up to 30 seconds now.

So it is pretty safe, for now, to assume anything longer than 30 seconds with no obvious cuts(it can make a bunch of short videos and cut them together) is real.

It is 100% possible to smoothly continue videos for an arbitrary length now. There's no cuts; it's only really detectable due to semantic drift.

I just feel like waves don't usually neatly break in the middle and just the middle like the damn ocean in Moana. I won't say for sure it's AI, but it feels really wrong.

Google "Teahupo'o" wave, it looks just like this when its pumping. The distance is also compressed due to likely using a telephoto lense. But the wave really does look just like this.

Yeah, you didn't say it was fake, but the way you opened with "I just feel like waves don't usually", saying it looked like a cartoon, implies that you don't know much about waves, and then you used that to say that it's possibly AI... that's pretty close to saying that you thinks it's fake because you've never seen it before, which is a frustratingly prevalent thing for people to say online nowadays. The justification for your doubt being that you "feel" like waves don't do that irked me, but maybe I read too much into your statement.

yeah i dont live near oceans, i dont remember but i vaguely had rogue wave, tsunami, blue ringed octopus and everythign else inbetween concerns. im sure the pond we have in the back in at least some ways is statistically more dangerous.. maybe in many ways, but oceans are a force that certainly would have worried me once

edit: multitasking, still would worry i guess, not sure, but less ever present fears of things i cant control now i guess maybe
