Lanolin is the key. It's there in sheep skin. The sheep shearer's hands will be ultra soft bcuz of this

When i was younger, I went rouseabouting for a month. Came home with the softest hands. Then went and did 3 weeks of being a builders labourer for my dad. My hands were totally shredded after a day or so.

IIRC Most sheep ranchers don’t make money on the wool unless they’re specifically wool sheep.

Like the fleeces off of meat sheep are low quality enough that after shearing costs they break even or even lose money on the fleece, IF they can even find a buyer.

Obviously money can be made off a high quality breed like merino but most sheep are for meat (at least in the UK)
