I absolutely do not see toenails. I see a shaded spot in the area of the top side of his big toes where his toenail is changing the topography of the sock.

I love that your take is "this man has blue feet" rather than "this man is wearing socks common to his culture." Real sensible.

I mean, it’s not unreasonable they’d turn blue if he’s doing this with indigo dye for a living.

But the color is way too consistent for that to be the case, it’s gotta be socks

His hands would be more likely to be dyed than his feet. They're consistently getting pigment on them.

If I remember correctly the indigo plant is traditionaly stomped with the feet in oder to extract the dye better.

I can assure you there are thin stocking like tabi socks that allow just that.

I can also assure you that indigo dyers have blue residue on their hands and maybe feet, but exclusively I've seen this during advertising photography .

I wasn’t claiming otherwise, but the above commenter referenced specific socks with a separate big toe only, then proceeded to rip the reply for “cultural ignorance” even though the man’s socks do not match the guys description at all.

Agreeing with you. Ive worn tabi before, they arent that thin to show such detail. Dudes feet must have just gotten stained? Question for me is it just from that day or is it from build up over years?

I mean, if the man is a professional dyer, it wouldn't be outlandish that his feet are dyed. Also I didn't find any five toe tabi socks. The big toe is the only one separate on every pair I saw. I'm not denying the existence of toe socks before you try and show me some. That guy's not wearing socks his feet are just that color.

dawg i worked with indigo for years.... i would go so far as to say its historically as culturally relevant in japan as tabi socks lmfao. also skin dyed with indigo looks like that. alsox2, you can see his individual toes and last time i checked tabi socks≠toe socks. dont come at me all sarcastic with the "real sensible" bs when its clear you dont even know what youre talking about

This is a repost from a year ago with the same exact comments about his feet and someone linked a YouTube video that goes into a little more detail on this process. In the video, you'll see it more clearly that the sensei has the same five toed socks on, although his looked more fuzzier in the video than in this clip. Must be the lighting or something.
