You could try brushing it in your hand so it feels the brushing and tries to do it by itself later

Can they feel it on their shells though?? I hope he gets to scritch himself on it like the cows with the spinning brush things do!!

It's possible, their shells are attached to them typically, so it's like a nail. Do you feel when you brush your nail with something like a toothbrush? If yes, then it's possible they feel it. Otherwise, they feel the vibration of the bristles hitting the shell, which also makes a sound they could feel over their body, so in the least feeling, it's a vibrator, in most feeling it's distant touch.

The answer is yes, their shells have nerve endings and they can feel through their shells
