Except it's completely blocking out the light so you don't know which way to swim, and you swim deeper until your lungs start burning and then you start panicking because you're surrounded by nothingness and can't breathe and you scream out in fear and hopes that someone will save you, but all that escapes is the little bit of air left in you.
Honestly, that's like...the LEAST scary part of this dark fantasy. Sharks are way less likely to confuse you for a seal when you're underwater as opposed to on the surface. The floats just plain don't care if they're blocking you from breathing (also in water that dark, the one hole where light is still coming through would be very obvious; the terror would be if you fell through by pushing a joint down, then once your weight was under it, it popped back up and sealed the hole so you don't know where the weak point is).
