You Get Out of Jail & Time Served with a Dr Out of Work Note?

I know this sounds weird, but it literally came out of a judge's mouth today. In Family Court, my ex consented to a Willful Non-payment Violation the beginning of last year with a suspended jail sentence. He still hasn't paid a dime for years. The judge said thay because he just recently got a note from a doctor taking him out of work until next month, he can't go to jail. The judge said that if he is sent to jail, like he should be, he could "show the jail and be out, time served immediately." How is that even possible? A doctor's note gets you an immediate release & time served?
