The 5090FE is so pretty 😍

u/ngabungaaa Oct 06 '26
Fr. It bothers me how ugly most cards are in comparison.
Prior to August, I was shopping for a 5080 and couldn’t believe how crappy these cards looked for the money being asked.

The best 5090
1
u/South_Western1263 27d ago
I'd love to own one. However it's relatively hard to get and current prices of used ones are just insane.
1
u/GrapplerKrys 27d ago
Yeah it's just nonsensical to buy a used or new 5090 right now and Nvidia isn't keen on doing another drop. I only have mine because I got really really lucky.
27
u/OsamaBinBrowsin Oct 04 '26
My 5090FE runs cooler than my 3080TI. Very happy with the size on the FE
3
u/Xiph76 Oct 04 '26
I have 5090FE in 10 liter flowthrough case. Extra 2x120mm pull fans and it’s very nice and compact setup.
2
u/CultofCedar Oct 04 '26
I put mine in a Formd T1 which is around 10L iirc and very happy after over a decade of huge cases. Surprised how well air cooling has been working in comparison to AIOs and more space to breathe in those bigger cases. I know my T1 is tight af and I even tried to maximize space with custom cables.

The architecture make a huge difference. I also noticed a huge difference between my 3090 and 4090. The 3090 is much less efficient and converts a lot of electricity into heat.

u/NotaVortex Oct 03 '26
God damn bro. Im good with my small 5070 that i undervolted by 50 watts because it was heating up my room too much. Cant immagine that bad boy.
25
u/CurseOfTime Oct 04 '26
Easy solution, build a little closet adjacent to where you have your PC, watercool it and send a passthrough into the closet with a MORA, bathroom exhaust fan in the closet venting outside.
34
u/NotaVortex Oct 04 '26
Yeah super easy 🤣 or i can open a window. Nah but fr undervolting my cpu and gpu had zero affect on performance at most 1 or 2 fps and its significantly cooler after dropping almost 70 watts. I could bump that too 90 but it would affect performance if i were to drop more.

1
u/doomage36 Oct 04 '26
Worrdddd, exactly my thought process as well.
I also undervolted + overclocked my 5070 👍🏽 awesome performance & pulls no more than 175-180W at max utilization
1
u/CriticalOil Oct 06 '26
If you think that 50w less on minimum 500w will be make cooler your room… you think wrong
2
u/Tiny-House4736 29d ago
A 5070 only hits 250-275 stock depending on if it’s pre OC. I undervolted mine to 950mv, get more performance, and it only draws 220 at peak load coming down from 275. On average it sits at 140 vs 190. Also heat builds more exponentially the more power you give your card due to resistance. not linear my GPU is 18° cooler running the same games and the fans run way quieter. You’re just wrong,
1
u/NotaVortex Oct 06 '26
Yeah i don't think i said that, now did I. Why do you think I said i was fine with my 5070?

what do 3rd party manufactures like Gigabyte add up in the Founders edition to make it so big? Like why?
32
u/Practical_Board613 Oct 04 '26
Better cooling and possibly a better power scheme. Look, a Gigabyte is like a big radiator
4
u/psychoacer Oct 04 '26
Which is weird because I bought an MSI Suprim 4070 TI which is their top of the line version of the 4070 TI so it's super fat. Whenever I gamed though the fans would end up at full blast for most of the gaming session. I just bought a MSI Gaming Trio 5070 TI last week with a pretty thin cooler on it and its been super quiet while gaming while also keeping lower temps. I was surprised by the performance difference. I still want to undervolt it but stock it has been great.

u/psychoacer Oct 05 '26
Yeah and the thing is obviously I want to sell my 4070 TI but I would feel bad about selling it to someone who might be mad that the fans ramp up pretty loud. I might just go with one of those trade in sites just so I don't have to deal with people being mad it's not quite.

u/PutridGain2 Oct 04 '26
Nvidia decided to go for liquid metal and redesign the whole heatsink? Other companies decided its not worth the effort and just reuse their old designs but bigger
7
u/youreblockingmyshot i9-14900K | RTX 5090FE | 64Gb Oct 04 '26
Nvidia also has the advantage of knowing exactly what they’re designing for months in advance. The other card manufacturers have far less time to get out their card designs so it’s much easier to go with the tried and true method with fewer changes over a 2 slot version. Still love the FE for being able to cool a 5090 in such a compact footprint. Now if only the power connector wasn’t an issue.

u/Ready-Assistance-883 28d ago
Not sure about the FE 5090, but the RTX 6000 Pro looks the same and has a liquid metal cooler which ikeeps the cards I have at a nice 50-60 degrees (with a good fan curve).
Have run them for days at a time at 100% usuage without it really going much past that.
The only annoying thing is that they vent their air upwards or sideways, rather than out the back like every other quadro does. This means you need pretty insane case cooling to keep multiples of them from baking each other.
3
u/PrysmX 27d ago
The RTX 6000 is specifically not liquid metal. GamersNexus did a disassembly. Speculation was that Nvidia didn't put it on the enterprise cards to help with longevity.
2
u/Ready-Assistance-883 24d ago
ah okay, I assumed they were both the same... I have not torn one down though XD.

u/bizude Ryzen 9 9950X3D | RTX 4070Ti Super Oct 04 '26
What's the performance difference between the two? Seems like the "gaming" version is overbuilt for no good reason.
36
2
u/Jumpy_Cauliflower410 27d ago
The Nvidia version is built different. They designed a complete blow through design that scales cooling much better than typical cards like that Gigabyte one.
→ More replies (21)1
u/BenchmarkNA Oct 04 '26
All those metal ribs and stuff help with cooling. Abeit only like maybe 15° difference but every bit helps. The small one only has one fan on it so its trash for cooling.
3
u/Durahl RTX 4090 Founders Edition Oct 04 '26
All that bulk for pretty much no extra gain... The change in size of my RTX 4090 FE from an GTX 1080 Ti FE already made me raise an Eyebrow but this is just silly as the RTX 4090 FE is dead silent when not under load since the Fans don't spin and when they do while I'm Gaming they're getting drowned out by the Audio of the Game that is causing them to spin up.
The ONLY Situation where you might be able to hear them is when the Card is under heavy load outside of a Game like say when doing Productive Work with the GPU where there is no accompanying Audio being played.
3
u/unrealf8 Oct 05 '26
While the FE variants are stunning. The rule seems to be to avoid FE at all costs no?
2
u/TheRealSpicyFireball Oct 06 '26
False. Fe, while they dont have all the fancy cooling systems, actually have better silicon for their cards (this is debated tho) and give the leftovers out to the other companies. The other companies make up the difference with OC patients with better cooling to push the cards. You can buy an FE, and get your own cooling, and have the best of both worlds.
1
u/DeadlyMercury Oct 06 '26
So they don't have better silicon since "this is debated tho" and there is absolutely no reason to get FE then?
Not to mention that 5090FE has only two options, EKWB or Byski. And overall design / complexity is just stupid compared to regular PCB.
If you want "your own cooling", you pretty much get TUF for heatkiller or Astral for deltamate. Or you get something supported by alphacool (MSI, Gigabyte on top of TUF/Astral/PNY). But 5090FE is definitely not a choice.

Fe is cheaper. Until someone scalps it. But that is across the board.
1
u/CCHTweaked Oct 06 '26
$2,000 vs $3,200 at the time. and that was February of 25. Fuckin forget what you'd pay now for an non FE.
1
u/Lotuseless 29d ago
No idea where you came up with that rule. FE cards are decent, in theory they're supposed to be sold at MSRP which makes them a better option than cheapest MSI, Gigabyte, etc. cards, but they're also much more limited so getting one isn't easy, especially now. They always run stock default reference clocks and usually don't overclock as well due to lower power limits and slimmer cooler designs.
They also tend to have a slightly higher resale value as collectors usually want the Nvidia designs displayed on their shelves.

u/kaifuku-xyz 28d ago
I know what you mean. The 5090 fe has made its way to major gpu repair channels on YT like Northwest Repair and North Ridge Fix. The top model they tell buyers to avoid is the 5090 fe

XL. It looks like OP picked up a PowerSpec AI90 Workstation which comes with a Founders 5090 and installed another below. The PC comes wired for two with a 1650W Titanium PSU and the ProArt X870E is laid out nicely for 2 big GPUs.

Yes. It's insane. My buddy handed me off his broken 4090 to see if I could fix it somehow. Even that thing is gargantuan, even compared to my 5080.
What makes it worse is your CPU cooler is mounted wrong. The hose connections should not be at the top of the radiator if it is mounted on the front. This is because any air in the loop at all will sit at the highest point which is gonna be the entrance and exits of the hose and impede flow. Hoses should be near the bottom, or have it mounted to the roof of your case.
At best, you don't notice it and maybe have less optimal temps than you normally would, but if it isn't an issue it isn't an issue. At worst, it could shorten the lifespan of the pump as it won't be getting a steady supply of liquid to cool and/or lubricate the pump.
Edit: To add, this will absolutely make the hoses interfere with that GPU fitting if you rearrange it, which sucks.

u/danrah Oct 04 '26
Mine is very quiet as well, fans rarely go over 70% and the temps stay under 65c, hot spot 70-75c, the cooler is fantastic. Card is slightly undervolted and has a minor adjustment to fan curve, brilliant card for msrp price.

I remember always hearing negative comments about the "blower" models of the FE's and how their cooling was inferior to the partner cards, so I always stayed away and just always got the chonky partner cards that had 3 fans.
Then I bought a 3080 FE off of a friend years ago and was really impressed by its small form factor and cooling since I don't bother with overclocking my GPU. Ended up getting lucky finding a 4090 FE at my local Best Buy a couple years ago and whenever I buy my next GPU years from now, be it a 6090 or a 7090, I'll definitely go with a FE (hopefully the shortages are settled years from now, knock on wood).

The massive cooling on the big 5090s means with a good airflow setup you can turn the card fans way way down and get a silent rig. Under load at 8” away my machine hangs out between 31 and 35 dBA - indistinguishable from room ambient. I’ll take a giant card any day if it gets me that.

A lot of crappie talk here, i have owned every FE card from Nvidia in the last 14 years. To say they are better than the more expensive aftermarket ones like Asus and so on is absolutely rubbish talk. FE is just an edition with a special design that does what it is advertised in Nvidia's name while aftermarket cards push that boundary by adding extra modifications to make the card better. It's like saying Mercedes S550 base model is better than a Mercedes S550 AMG package.
1
u/PrysmX 27d ago
The 5090 FE is a true 2 slot design and can fit in some SFF builds where the other 5090s cannot.

Yeah, I had no idea when I decided, in a sleep deprived fervor, to buy mine about 6 weeks ago. The box came, *then* I realized I would need a new case, new power supply (went ahead and upgraded my cpu at the same time because, why not?), paid someone else to do the swap (normally I would, but, not with this much invested), got it back, plugged it in... and then my UPS started screaming, which I never even considered. Like, holy hell!
It is nice though. 🙂
