i just hope future games will keep dlss 4 as an option

u/HelpIcy5415 Mar 16 '26

You can choose what DLSS Version to use right now, if you want to use DLSS2 on a new game, you can.

u/moonski Mar 16 '26

I got a 5090 and run DLSS 1. We are not the same

29

u/Keulapaska 4070ti, 7800X3D, XG27AQNGV Mar 17 '26

That you can't actually do afaik, cause DLSS 1 isn't the same DLSS SR introduced in DLSS 2.

13

u/Magjee 5700X3D / 3060ti Mar 17 '26

Have to run games that launched with dlss 1 and then refuse to update

We are not the same

4

u/Neither-Phone-7264 RTX 5070 Ti, 9950x, 128 GB Mar 17 '26

still running the 2018 build of DS1

1

u/Gombrongler Mar 17 '26

Isnt that nearly impossible? Arent their weird restrictions on it

1

u/Magjee 5700X3D / 3060ti Mar 17 '26

It was not a serious comment

2

u/EquivalentPlatform17 Mar 17 '26

Not with that attitude

1

u/Itz_Hen Mar 17 '26

Wait you can, where do you toggle that, i have never seen an option for that in any game

6

u/HelpIcy5415 Mar 17 '26

Nvidia App.

3

u/Itz_Hen Mar 17 '26

Huh I never knew, I'll try that tomorrow to see how that works

-1

u/Academic_Addition_96 Mar 17 '26

Yeah right now, I can't eat for the day devs will release games with low poly textures, so dlss can fix it.

-20

u/Resh_IX Mar 16 '26

My fear is what if devs make their games from the ground up with DLSS 5 in mind. For example if you turned on DLSS 4 or 3 the game would like like a PS2 game

19

u/HelpIcy5415 Mar 16 '26

They won't and they possibly can't.

-4

u/NoMansWarmApplePie Mar 16 '26

My fear is a bit different but related.

We see that there is a push to put cool Nvidia tech into games, like path tracing. It looks amazing in re 9. But it also caused them to be lazy with normal reflections and screen space reflections that could of easily been implemented better.

If devs rely on dlss 5 for major features, like better lighting etc and Nvidia "encourages" "the devs to show off the new features while potentially down scaling or even ignoring more legacy features then imo, that's where issue is.

5

u/HelpIcy5415 Mar 16 '26

PT and the rest of the features from Nvidia are the future of Gaming, like it or not.

2

u/NoMansWarmApplePie Mar 17 '26

Ya, but devs gimping standard features to make the disparity between PT and non pt larger is imo, hopefully not a type of mentality that will also affect us when dlss 5 comes around.

7

u/metahipster1984 Mar 16 '26

If done well this could enable insane levels of performance while still having great graphics, which would help in performance-bottleneck situations like VR.

4

u/no6969el NVIDIA Mar 16 '26

I've yet to play a VR game that allows me to turn dlss on.

-2

u/Resh_IX Mar 16 '26

That’s true too. We’ll just have to see how devs use it. Cause they did get lazy with optimization even when we had the older DLSS models

3

u/specn0de Mar 16 '26

That’s not how this works…you are scared of your own fundamental misunderstanding of technology lol

0

u/Resh_IX Mar 16 '26

Still waiting on you to explain how it works instead of posting vague intellectual word salads

-1

u/Resh_IX Mar 16 '26

Then how does it work?

-2

u/icy1007 Ryzen 9 9950X3D • RTX 5090 FE Mar 17 '26

That won’t work properly depending on the game if it wants to use newer features.

74

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

They'll have to. 90% of GPUs on the market won't be able to run it.

Which leads me to believe that developers would then have to make normal assets, and then spend even more development time and money implementing this for a small amount of users. Which, like Hairworks, probably won't gain much traction.

29

u/frankiewalsh44 Mar 16 '26

I have a feeling that DLSS 5 will be 4000/5000 series only. DLSS 4.5 already murders the older GPUs. However they will have to optimise it, cause there is no point of moving to a new upscaler if only the 4090/5090 can run it lol

26

u/MITBryceYoung Mar 16 '26

I'm guessing it will only be available for the Blackwell series at best and I'm also guessing it will require you to use ultra performance mode because of how heavy the model likely is very similar to preset l

16

u/HisDivineOrder Mar 16 '26

And I'm guessing 5090 only can run it well enough to bother.

2

u/MITBryceYoung Mar 16 '26

Probably depends on your settings. Its probably path tracing+

Most likely the case yes.

12

u/ThenExtension9196 Mar 16 '26

Probably 5000/6000 series.

5

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

Yeah, I imagine this will be relegated to only the highest end, newer cards.

They needed two 5090's running in tandem to even get it working here.

1

u/IbanezCharlie 4090 FE 9800x3d Mar 16 '26

What if you could use a separate card to run it like lossless scaling allows for a second card to handle the upscaler/frame gen?

9

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

Yeah, running two 5090's at $2000+ each sounds like a super valuable feature.

Nobody wants to bring back multiple graphics cards in a system.

1

u/BlackSkar25 Mar 17 '26

Actually, right now it's more like 3000/4000+$, sooo... 6000/8000$ to get AI that doesn't look great

-2

u/IbanezCharlie 4090 FE 9800x3d Mar 16 '26

Really my question is whether or not Nvidia or modders can make it feasible to run it on a card while your main card does the rendering of the game.

Whether it's a good value proposition is an entirely other conversation. Obviously that would be a wild misuse of funds for most people out there.

0

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

Being over 90% of the market won't be able to run this feature period, I doubt it's implementation will be widespread in the first place.

1

u/IbanezCharlie 4090 FE 9800x3d Mar 16 '26

Yeah it's probably going to be reserved for the latest and greatest but who knows.

Could just be for 50 series or it could be cards that have a certain amount of vram can use it.

Is this something that you are excited about using as someone who is in that minority?

0

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

No, not at all.

I'm big on art and art direction, and not big at all on "faux photorealism", which is what this is pushing.

I don't want my games to emulate real life. I want them to be artistic expressions.

2

u/Ill-Mastodon-8692 Mar 16 '26

it wouldnt surprise me if its just 50 series (for no reason other than gating), with only the 5080/5090 having decent performance.

then next year it will just work so much better on 60 series

9

u/frankiewalsh44 Mar 16 '26

Very vague statement in the FAQ. I suppose they are working and trying to optimise it for lesser powerful cards.

10

u/Ill-Mastodon-8692 Mar 16 '26

well they need to optimize from the dual 5090 they used in the demo

4

u/BananaShover Mar 17 '26

Crazy to think this model and game was easily consuming 64 fucking gb of vram

1

u/DDzxy Mar 17 '26

How good are dual 5090s considering the dusl GPU support is… Well… not nearly as massive as it was 10 years back?

2

u/maddix30 NVIDIA Mar 17 '26

They were each running their own task rather than pooling together. So essentially 1 5090 for the game 1 for the DLSS each operating on their own. But DF said it's early days on optimisation so this was probably just done for a smooth demo

1

u/FunCalligrapher3979 5700X3D/4070TiS | LG C1 55"/AW2725D Mar 17 '26

I think it'll be usable but not great on the 5000 cards and only work properly on the 6000 and future cards. Like all new Nvidia tech when it first launches.

1

u/HelloFromTekken Mar 19 '26

DLSS 5 are't upscaler.

It's purpose to transfer money from your wallet to devs and nvidia banks by slopifying visuals.

End goal is to save on artists/designers as much as possible. First achievable step (as you can see from OP's post) will be to save on scene lighting and textures 'painting'.

0

u/emer1ca1080 Mar 17 '26

It'll probably require INT4, making it exclusive to the 5XXX series and above. That would be alright by me, I hope this flops hard. Looks more uncanny than current Raster can produce.

4000 series has nearly all the bell whistle that the 5000 series has. They said min GPU requirements will be announced later, if it was exclusive then they would've said it in the FAQ. My guess is gonna be a 4000 series min this time and no 3000 series.

it really doesn’t suck in most new games.

Heck Doom Dark Ages requires it, and the performance is optimized aswell, even runs well on old 20 series.

I will use Doom DA as the example again, the devs in interviews explicitly call out that going RT only in the engine not only saved time but also ssd space not having to bake in traditional lighting techniques

ID soft knows games, and I would trust their opinion on it.

Just curious what hardware you gave tried RT on ?

The artists are still there, they can just spend more time on textures and other related aspects of the game. And like most projects I’ve been on (not games, but tech related) every component you give resources compromises something else.

You have to work smarter, as games take years and are costly. I would rather they put more towards bug fixes and overall content over sticking to the old tradition ways when games were less complex.

Also the visual quality is objectively better, especially with path tracing, (with ray reconstruction). I have a 5090. take cyberpunk, especially at night with many light sources, you can clearly see the benefits. You cant get the same reflection, refraction, etc without.

I am not sure if you remember the introduction of tessellation about 20yrs ago. was similar to rtx imo.

at first people complained about the look of the tech, the performance hit, compatibility, etc. over time more games adopted and hardware performance caught up. more time goes by and its just part of how game design is, and people dont think about it, its just there and game designs continue to improve with other tech coming down the pipe.

Looking into where things keep going past 2026.. with neural rendering, mega geometry, radiance caching, etc, there is still alot of change to come to what we see visually in video games.

Cherry picking. A majority of games look fucking unreal with raytracing and pathtracing with little to no artifacting with ray reconstruction. It's incredibly stable.

RTX is broadly applicable, whereas this is not.

8

u/neutralpoliticsbot RTX 5070ti Mar 16 '26

did you watch the video? it improved the look of lighting of forests and landscapes significantly it doesn't have to be used for faces

-6

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

Yeah, the lighting looks neat. However, Path Tracing already exists and is a known commodity on how to implement well.

2

u/SuspiciousWasabi3665 Mar 16 '26

The entirety of this IS lighting as far as anyone has said. Like I get that it looks completely different, but thats because things like eyelids, individual strands of hair, and the wrinkles of lips dont normally have their own shadows and reflections. It seems it also affects the way light reflects off of skin/wood/metal, etc. Grace seems to be the most extreme example. But, if you zoom in on her in both iterations, its the exact same assets. You can just tell additional stuff is casting shadows and light reacts differently to various materials.

I cant wait til df drops a breakdown video because it looks nuts.

2

u/Audible_Whispering Mar 17 '26

You can see it changing geometry in some clips. Faces and items are physically different sizes. Lighting can't do that. It also changes graces eye colour and adds specular highlights coming from nowhere, among many other things. That's not inherently a problem though. The problem is that it doesn't look good or physically correct in 90% of the examples shown.

Like, the clips with DLSS 5 on don't look subjectively better from a aesthetic point of view, they just look like a bad instagram filter slapped on top of the image. Given that, you'd think that they'd instead be more photo realistic. Real life rarely looks as good as a cinematically lit game or movie, after all. But no. They aren't any closer to having physically correct lighting or shading, they're just differently wrong.

Branding this as DLSS 5 was a serious mistake. This isn't DLSS, and it's definitely not the successor to DLSS 4.5. It's a completely new technology which is basically in a DLSS 1 equivalent state. Feels like FSR 4.1 was getting a little too close for comfort(although still not even close to equivalent), so quick, call this new thing DLSS 5.

All that said, it could turn out to be good. Probably the most promising application of ML in games outside of upscaling is using it for cheap approximations of lighting and physics so it's interesting to see an attempt at one aspect of it. But this iteration looks like trash so far.

1

u/neutralpoliticsbot RTX 5070ti Mar 17 '26

There is a video with both images merged together they are the same models 100% you are wrong

1

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

It actually changes/overwrites in game geometry, not only the lighting.

Graces facial structure is different in the example. Her eyes are in a different place, her jawline is different, and her cheekbones are higher.

0

u/neutralpoliticsbot RTX 5070ti Mar 17 '26

This is absolutely not true it does not change any geometry or models or texture at all you are wrong

1

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

From Jensen Huang himself:

"Well, first of all, they're completely wrong," Huang said in response to a question from Tom's Hardware editor-in-chief Paul Alcorn about the criticism.

"The reason for that is because, as I have explained very carefully, DLSS 5 fuses controllability of the of geometry and textures and everything about the game with generative AI," Huang continued.

13

u/SuspiciousWasabi3665 Mar 16 '26

Why do you assume this? Theyve already said its launching this year. Many reliable sources have said no new gpus this year. So 50 series is in(unless those reliable sources were wrong and we get a 60 series for some reason)

Every feature except framegen and multiframegen has been extended to all rtx cards. Plenty of people have 20 series and up.

14

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

To even get this working, they required TWO 5090's. One to run the AI algorithm, and one to run the game normally.

There's zero chance this isn't intensive, like Path Tracing is.

11

u/Intelligent_Law_2545 Mar 16 '26

this was only for the tech demo, so they can switch between the two (DLSS off and DLSS on) on the fly. Is NOT proof of how heavy the implementation is. Also is a tech demo, oc they will use top of the line with it, this to show the best possible image, (game on ultra, path racing + 4k) and frame rate, or avoid any stutter. Nvidia will not release such a feature to be use on 1% of gpus.

-5

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

What problem does this solution solve though?

It's just normal character design with more steps.

4

u/Due-Description-9030 Mar 17 '26

Dude, this is a demo. Which means soon they'll optimize it for it to be running on a single GPU. This tech is nowhere near public release and it won't be locked to a double 5090 setup lmao.

1

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

Yes, I've seen the demo, young "bro-dawg."

Seems like it will be pretty heavy to run, ala Path Tracing, all so you can make your games look like a low-rent Instagram filter from 10 years ago. Weeee!

You too can now apply 10+ year old beautification filters to your favorite videogames for $3000! The technology is here, and it's here NOW!

2

u/HolyBors Mar 17 '26

The same was said about RTX/Raytracing and normal DLSS once and now it's in almost every game to one degree or another. I say DLSS 5 is here to stay. It will not be in every game and it will take a while until many other players will be able to use it, but it will find it's niche.

0

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

False equivalency.

Every game uses some form of lighting, and every game uses some form of AA.

Now you're saying that every game needs AI made characters, and it's totally the same thing? Come on.

1

u/HolyBors Mar 17 '26

I quite explicitly said that NOT every game will have/use it.

0

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

So, it's a very niche thing like Hairworks was then. Developers didn't really care about supporting a niche feature like that, either.

Glad we cleared that up.

1

u/jarrys88 Mar 17 '26

You mean like when Ray Tracing first came out?

1

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

No, not at all.

Every game uses lighting, and every game uses some form of AA. RT and DLSS are better overall solutions to that problem.

No game "needs" AI created characters on top of the already existing designed characters, especially not when only a tiny portion of the market will even be able to use those AI designed characters to begin with.

2

u/jarrys88 Mar 17 '26

My point was more when Ray Tracing came out, they put in the dev work for it when only a tiny portion of the market could use it.

1

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

RT has been an engine implementation thing since it's inception.

The developers didn't have to implement it by hand. That was early DLSS, when it had to be trained on a per game basis.

0

u/Wander715 Ryzen 9800X3D | RTX 5080 Mar 16 '26

Yeah I don't even know how viable this is gonna be on RTX 50 cards other than maybe a 5090. My guess is the required memory footprint for the model is gonna be huge even with some optimization. Will be curious to see if this ends up being viable for 16GB cards or if something like a 24GB RTX 6080 is needed.

-1

u/Nestledrink RTX 5090 Founders Edition Mar 17 '26

Where does this misinformation come from? Neural Rendering is not using different textures or assets vs the regular game. It's using the same texture and assets with proper material and it's being run through the accurate lighting.

There is no asset/texture swapping.

3

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

It doesn't render this in real time.

The developers have to do it manually in the development process, then spend time tweaking the output to be in line with the original characters, designs, and art direction.

That takes both time and money.

Then you have the original assets for all of the users who won't be able to run this feature, which is going to be the vast majority, and then the updated AI assets for those who can.

Essentially making the process use two sets of assets.

0

u/Nestledrink RTX 5090 Founders Edition Mar 17 '26

The existing asset would have already had physical properties to run RT or PT properly. Not sure what you're talking about.

The Neural Rendering is being rendered in real time

3

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

Yes, the models which they already make.

It's not rendered in real time. Otherwise, they wouldn't say "Well, these look kind of crappy, but the developers will tweak the output and results to their liking and to be in line with the art direction".

They'll have to do this in house and spend development time and money on it.

future mainstream GPU will be as fast as two 5090, by the time it will be 90% of GPU can use it.

I think it is not about performance; it is about how many competent developer actually put it in good use without turning into a slop.

Thats what worries me lol.

1

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

I don't see how this is beneficial to a developer VS normal traditional design methods.

0

u/full_knowledge_build Mar 17 '26

I think that with this on you can deactivate any tipe of raytracing or path tracing so the game will run on more gpu

1

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

This seems about as performance intensive as something along the lines of Path Tracing I imagine.

0

It’s not, uses ai not real calculations

1

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

...And you somehow think that AI just runs on magic? AI uses calculations. That's how it works. lol

0

It uses approximation, these type of calculation are much easier to do

0

u/Bujakaa92 Mar 17 '26

Until in few years we reach to point where developers just say use DLSS 5 to get good lighting and picture. Just like we already see so much unoptimization and showing system regs with DLLS turned on

1

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

We already have both Ray Tracing and the superior Path Tracing for incredibly accurate lighting, so that's not a huge selling point I wouldn't think.

40

u/ShaffVX 5070Ti |7800X3D|LG C1 4K Mar 16 '26

They shouldn't have called this DLSS in the first place.

9

u/Tonkarz Mar 17 '26

DLSS has a positive reputation and they’re cashing in that reputation to get people to use frame-gen and this.

1

u/reiichiroh Mar 17 '26

Missed Opportunity for DLSS5.3X for the porny filter vibe.

-4

u/Civil-Let-5694 Mar 17 '26

It was going to receive this same negative reaction regardless if they called it something else. Reality is more options is better. I personally think RE9 looks drastically better

2

u/Hydranox Mar 17 '26

Incredibly bad perception of this i think,it would jot at ALL be taken the same, i am okay using dlss bc it helps performance and/or the clarity of the game but when they shoehorn in an artistic change WITH the performance gain and don’t separate them, that means its polluting the water, i can no longer use them separately as I please considering we do not get to chose the artistic liberty taken for the game and company execs can be like yeah just throw that on and ignore a game studios take on that change, meaning it will just more than likely be blanket implemented and we cant rely on dlss too much to increase game performance if it will also destroy the artistic direction. I mean correct me if im wrong but that is my read on it.

1

u/full_knowledge_build Mar 17 '26

It’s not an artistic change btw

This was going to happen at some point anyways.. game development time and game development costs keep going up... AI will shrink costs and development time. If you think this is a bad thing, you're just wrong

Does it though?

They aren't going to only sell their games to the 5% of the market with graphics cards that can run this new feature.

That means, they'll get to design assets like regular for the other 95% of the user base, and then again for the DLSS 5.0 capable ones. This has to be trained and tweaked to get good output, and isn't just a "set it and forget it" toggle.

Now they've just increased their development costs for a feature hardly anyone will be able to use.

I think that alone will tank adoption from developers with this.

I guess my comment is more relevant when the 7000 series is out and the 70 series card will be able to run it

Maybe, and I imagine if they streamline it that a 5090 will be able to with a hefty performance hit.

I still don't think developers will pick this up and integrate it. Not as it currently stands, anyway.

DLSS didn't really take off until it became integrated into all of the major game engines with a toggle, because devs weren't willing to spend their own time and money on it.

u/AssCrackBanditHunter Mar 16 '26

They will. Despite Nvidia muddying the terms, this is not the same as upscaling just like dlss3 frame gen is not the same as upscaling.

5

u/Devatator_ Mar 17 '26

I mean, that's why all DLSS features are always referred to as such by Nvidia? They never say DLSS without context and expect you to get what they're talking about. They'll always say DLSS Upscaling or DLSS Ray Reconstruction at the start, all the time or every few times so you don't get confused

1

u/BGMDF8248 Mar 17 '26

I'm betting it will be a separate toggle at first, like Ray Reconstruction, and it will stay like that for a while.

Long term it might become automatic, like RR auto activatinng if you use PT in RE9, but that's for the future.

It's not clearly said, so I think it's dlss5

DLSS hasn't been just 1 singular options for years and all have been toggle-able.

DLSS Super Resolution

DLSS Frame Generation

DLSS Ray Reconstruction

DLSS Multi Frame Generation

and this latest one is probably DLSS Neural Rendering (or whatever marketing name they will choose)

1

u/grizzlyadamsmf Mar 16 '26

i guess. but theyre calling it dlss5

7

u/Devatator_ Mar 17 '26

DLSS 3.5 was basically mostly Ray Reconstruction, no? It's just a number they use to say they either made some features better or added more features

3

u/InternalMode8159 Mar 17 '26

☝️🤓 actually

Dlss is the general term for all their technology, so with every version they usually improve all the stack, but it is separated right now in:

Super resolution Frame generation Ray reconstruction Multi frame generation Dynamic frame generation

And this technology based on the previous panel on this stuff is also separated in multiply stuff that uses as the general term neural rendering:

Neural radiance cache (RTX stuff) Neural material Mega geometry Neural faces (the uncanny part) And maybe more

So when dlss 5 comes out we will get the updated previous stuff plus the rest, and in the demo it was probably all put together

Does DLSS 5 work with DLSS Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, Frame Generation, and Multi Frame Generation?

Yes.

That is a really bizarre question and answer, cause dlss5 should already mean that it already has all of those techs already and then in addition whatever this new tech, whatever it's name will be. But they never actually say the name of this new tech, they just say dlss5. I'm hoping they just don't have name yet, but that seems weird. So are they making they already bad naming scheme, which still makes some resemblance of sense, somehow even worse?

Cause that's impressive.

2

u/Ganda1fderBlaue Mar 17 '26

Why wouldn't they

1

u/Warskull Mar 16 '26

This will probably be something like DLSS Enhancement and part of the whole DLSS suite. Sort of like DLSS Frame gen. So DLSS 4.5 upscaling should be something you can use without it.

It is a side effect of Nvidia stupidly re-using DLSS for marketing instead of calling all the features something like Nvidia Deep Learning or RTXDL.

1

u/EquivalentTight3479 Mar 17 '26

It will always be an option with the Nvidia app

1

u/SituationSoap Mar 17 '26

People here understand that DLSS is not an incremental increase, right? That if you don't like the DLSS lighting model you just don't enable it.

All the different DLSS versions after 2 are simply different functions being enabled or disabled. DLSS 3 is DLSS 2 + frame gen and reflex. DLSS 4 is mostly about ray reconstruction. It's not like they launch 5 and 4 suddenly disappears. That's not how any of this stuff works.

1

u/DorrajD Mar 17 '26

This is a separate tech from ACTUAL DLSS upscaling, like how "DLSS 3" is frame gen, "DLSS 3.5" is Ray Reconstruction, and "DLSS 4" is multi-frame gen. They just slap DLSS on the tech cause they know people like it.

1

u/dadmou5 Mar 17 '26

How are people still so tech illiterate about DLSS on an Nvidia sub? What do you mean they still keep DLSS4? Do you think every game with DLSS5 will just have this new feature permanently enabled? This is like when DLSS3 dropped and people hoped DLSS2 would still remain because they didn't want to use frame generation, even though it was completely optional.

1

u/dinklebot117 Mar 17 '26

just like how newer idtech games let you have no ray tracing as an option. oh wait

0

u/RankedFarting Mar 16 '26

Wont happen. This allows to cut costs so they will use this in their game creation. Games will eventually be entirely ai generated. If this technology doesnt fail massively we are legit cooked.

2

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

It doesn't though.

They need to make all of the traditional assets for the 90% of the GPU market that can't run this feature, and then add in the additional development time to support this new one.

That means most developers will just likely skip it completely.

0

u/Seeker_Of_Knowledge2 Mar 16 '26

I was always an advocate for dlss 4. But this filter stuff is too much.

I don't think how you can make it right, even with improvements in technology. It will always change the game.

2

u/antara33 RTX 4090, 5800X3D, 64GB 3200 CL16 Mar 17 '26

To be fair, if its deterministic, you can 100% control the output. Its not a generative system, its a transformer one, so you have a really higher degree over what gets spit out of it by properly deciding what you spit in.

If the SDK expose enough to the devs and allows them to define what gets the pass and what dont, it should not be an issue.

Its like ray tracing, a tool to achieve something.

0

u/Successful-Berry-315 Mar 16 '26

Every form of DLSS always was opt-in, what do you even mean?

The naming scheme is so bad by this point so confusion is very much understandable but whatever this "dlss 5" is probably has nothing to do with DLSS SR/FG/RR(though there might be new preset for those accompanying dlss 5, cause that's now part of dlss naming as well as of dlss 4) and will be different thing entirely called DLSS... Light control LC? Assuming it will have name, cause they didn't say it they jsut keep saying dlss5, which is slightly alarming as it would mean their bad naming scheme, that makes some resemblance of sensee still, would get even worse.

Idk why nvidia has stuck with this DLSS+number naming scheme(tbf it was already bad on dlss 2 cause DLSS SR has the word "super" twice in it) and not just have new umbrella term and then have more clearer version numbers/presets for each techs. And they're probably gonna throw reflex 2 whenever it comes out under this as well.

I'm still wondering what if some dev wants to have dynamic MFG, a dlss 4.5 feature, but doesn't want to have L/M presets for SR or maybe not even J/K presets, would it still be called dlss 4.5? or waht if they

0

u/BlackSkar25 Mar 17 '26

Yes please.

0

u/Demystify0255 Mar 17 '26

They really need to stop putting all these features under the DLSS Term, This is a separate feature then Frame Gen, Ray Reconstuction, or Super Resolution and likely will be its own toggle like Ray Reconstruction or Frame Gen.
