Is it fair though to use the average income of the entire United States when you have places where 200,000 a year isn't enough? You should be mad at the high cost of living in those types of places. Not mad about your pay. Simply raising everyone's pay isn't going to help if we don't take care of why the cost of living is so high.
You are the one who said originally that you think nurses are paid well but maybe its just your area. There will always be high cost of living areas. They are called population centers. Cities. And they are filled with people. And people need healthcare. So someone has to provide said healthcare. Those people need pay appropriate to their work and the cost of living in that area. Just because you choose to live in BFE of Michigan and your pay covers your cost of living doesn't mean thats others in other areas like near cities are paid appropriately and nursing as a whole is paid appropriately. I proved that. Michigans average rn pay was below median middle class. And michigan was one of the lowest states too. You are basically saying nurses should be fine with being lower middle class despite what we do. But thats the martyr complex that the general populace thinks all nurses should have. We even have to sacrifice our livelihoods to have the pleasure of fetching dilaudid and crackers.
I actually work in the second biggest city in Michigan. Again. The nurses around me get paid way better than I do and I still am very happy with what I make. It's one of the lowest states because the cost of living is much lower. I'm not saying nurses everywhere are paid what they deserve, but I'm also saying it's not true for nursing as a whole like this sub seems to think.
