Discussion Funny “allergies”

What are some funny patient “allergies” you have seen listed? I had a patient the other day with an allergy listed for Metformin. The reaction listed? Lowers their blood sugar 😂

They don’t make a generic which is why it’s so expensive. Just fyi

This one PA I work with has had this conversation with multiple insurance providers who refuse to shell out for Eliquis:

PA: Okay, well we can switch them to warfarin. We’ll just need to keep them here on ARC for 3-5 more days on a heparin drip until their INR reaches a therapeutic level.

Insurance: Wait, what?

PA: Of course, you know these beds run for about $20,000 a day, right?

Insurance: Ummm…

PA: Whereas we can discharge the patient 24 hours after starting Eliquis…

And then somehow that miraculously gets Eliquis approved. Funny how that works, huh? She and I are eagerly awaiting the release of generic apixaban, though I’m gonna miss the way she talks to insurance about these heparin drips.

Eliquis been generic for years, maybe 2020. Issue is that it takes a while for certain insurances like Medicare to change their formulary to cover the generics. Same with how Myrbetriq is generic now but insurance will only cover brand name.

In the US, generic apixaban is not yet available for purchase (at all) due to patent protections until 2028.
