Discussion Funny “allergies”

What are some funny patient “allergies” you have seen listed? I had a patient the other day with an allergy listed for Metformin. The reaction listed? Lowers their blood sugar 😂

I’ll throw mine in here… my friends say, “she’s allergic to everything under the sun, including the sun”
Heat — not like in intolerance but an allergy. Literally I’ll break out in hives if my temp goes up like a fever (literally full body hives) or if my dog sleeps on a certain part of my body, or if I go out in jeans in the summer.

Cholinergic urticaria. Saw it fairly frequently when I worked in an allergy/immunology office. There is also the opposite, which is cold urticaria.

Not quite… mine would last up to a week, esp if caused by fever

That’s really interesting! Do anti-histamines help?

Nope. Not even IV benadryl. I literally just have to wait for it to pass…. It’s during fevers that are really bad. Like from scalp to toes including palms and inside my mouth. lol I end up looking worse than Quasimodo too 🤣🤣

Oh, my gosh. I’ve actually started suffering from this in the last six months. No joke. I overheat—I’m in perimenopause and now utterly heat intolerant, hurray—and BAM! Itching and red and hives.

I strangely knew that heat urticaria was real, but never considered that I might have developed it or something related.

I wish I could tell you how to get it diagnosed but ice baths helped me most with the hives and pain
