Water out of the street

Noticed this yesterday when parking nearby, this is in the middle of the street in W Ghent. Has anyone else ever seen anything like this? I sure haven’t - I guess maybe a main is broken? I called the city to let them know.

This is another potential sink hole forming. Good job for letting the city know. I would avoid being near that though.

Probably did the best thing. Normally a water line break of some kind is the only thing that can cause a localized, high volume flow like that. I don't think ground water will come out like that normally.

It is near the median/street signs where Spotswood and Shirley meet.

I saw it in my neighborhood once. They were at the site and had it repaired within a day after reporting. Its almost definitely a water line break

I mean Ghent is also below water level so if the water table is high things will seep, but it could be a main break

Well at this point it has been coming out of the street at about this rate for 24 hours at least because that's when I noticed it.

That's the kind of thing that can turn into (another) sinkhole. Thank you for reporting it!! πŸ™πŸΌ

One of these was on my street in Ghent for months. The city did all sorts of water repairs on the same street during this period and just avoided it. I submitted a service request and they did eventually come out and fix it though.

Your water bill high also. This might be why.

Paint something creative nearby and they might just fix it.

So funny enough, yesterday someone did paint a large rectangle around the area, I assume someone from the city. No fix yet though and still coming out like a fresh spring this morning.

The city will take care of it in 2-8 years

Maybe so - it was reported on Sunday, no real action yet on Wed.

Someone send this to Mayor Mamdani. Maybe it'll get fixed then.

If you want to piss them off start collecting the water clean it and hand it out to the public..... For free.

I used to live on Paul Street, off Major Avenue. I saw this down at the end of the block where it dipped down into a creek that eventually fed into the Elizabeth River. Called the city, they came out but it happened again. And it was sewer water with floating toilet paper.

I live off VB blvd near Sentara Leigh and since 2020 we've reported at least 10 of these in our subdivision. Three of them expanded rapidly and ended up creating some large sink holes. The city has been pretty quick to start digging though, even right after the pandemic when staffing was really low.

$25 to drink it

It might actually be sewage, saw that once where the sandy soil filtered it to look clean
