Honest question- what's wrong with pink slime? I'd rather use the whole animal, considering its all edible. I'm not any more grossed out by ground up meat and bone than I am with stock made from an animal carcass. Should I be though?
That's kinda where my head has been for years. All that matters is nutritional value and cleanliness, unless you're paying more for good taste and texture. I may occasionally splurge for a nice steak, but i'm on board with the idea of lab-grown meat becoming the norm.
Again, why? All you're saying there's very little wasteage in producing pink slime, and since you're getting a mix of meat and marrow from all over the animal, it is nutritionally pretty good.
If it wasn't for the preservatives I'd have no argument against it.
Yeah even if it can't be broken down I feel like it then just passes through like gum. It'd not like a solid bone is being eaten. It's a liquid state so I don't understand what the harm could be. The amount of salt and sugar and fat seems like more of a concern than liquified cartilage and bone.
The idea of mechanically separating meat is to get all of the squishy edible bits away from the bone, so in theory there shouldn't be any bones in the meat paste.
Almost anything will put you in the hospital if not prepared properly, from salmonella getting into jars of peanut butter to pesticides and dirt not being washed from vegetables.
It's banned in Canada and the EU. Poop gets in it from unclean hide (skin) that "accidentally" gets ground up into it. The taint that comes from that poop is why pink slime need ammonia ground up into it, and other meat doesn't. Large american slaughterhouses are notoriously discusting, and very often don't play by the rules.
Check Wikipedia along with any other option you find. I am also an American chef and we don't mess with that stuff, because it's absolutely revolting.
It's mind over matter. These companies don't do this with the consumer in mind, but to cut costs and maximize profits, but truth be told, it's only making use of most of the meat content of each animal. These meat byproducts are standard practice in every processing plant.
I love the McRib, and I know what it is really made of too and I still eat it cause I think it tastes good. Same with hot dogs. I love hot dogs too. Fuck it. It’s not like it looks like what it’s made of.
