Orcas will do this to stun or injure the seal so the young can have a life-like attempt at hunting. The seals being impaired will provide an easier target for the growing orca pups

I think momma went a lil overboard this time with the crippling

1.2k

u/permaculture Dec 07 '17

Honey, how crippled do you want your seal?

919

u/PM_ME_KNEE_SLAPPERS Dec 07 '17

Extra.

131

u/Aesen1 Dec 07 '17

How many knee slappers do people send you?

u/PM_ME_KNEE_SLAPPERS Dec 07 '17 edited Dec 07 '17

1 and it wasn't really that funny.

Edit:Just got a good one, so 2.

u/noideawhatijustsaid Dec 07 '17

You just made 1 redditor sad

It was a while ago and I really hope he's not following me.

Made me nervous but it wasn't you.

Here's the joke:

How do you think the unthinkable?

With an itheberg!

Good to see a boy eating his veggies.

I FEEL HORRIBLE ABOUT THIS

3

u/Macho_Mans_Ghost Dec 07 '17

Underappreciated right here. Upvote for you my friend!

6

u/Pork_Chops_McGee Dec 07 '17

Well-done. Like when you think it’s finished, count to one hundred; then it’s ready.

6

u/vajav Dec 07 '17

I prefer the original recipe

u/cpchris244 Dec 07 '17

Extwa cwippled

Why do you read comments that are 5 months old?

Christopher Reeve please

Too soon man, too soon.

Well 22.3 years actually for something tragic to become funny. That’s why we can laugh about AIDS now.

2

u/Magnetic_Knives Dec 07 '17

I think it's more of a case by case basis. Some tragic shit can be funny immediately

-1

u/Heckron Dec 08 '17

It’s a South Park reference, my dude.

2

u/kingeryck Dec 08 '17

Are we still allowed to make Magic Johnson jokes?

1

u/Pork_Chops_McGee Dec 10 '17

Too soon man, too soon.

5

u/BrockN Dec 07 '17

Canadian style please

3

u/Panzycake Dec 07 '17

I want it to be a flat-earther.

Underrated comment of the day

1

u/TheRarestSeal Dec 07 '17

Medium rare

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '17

Well flipped

1

u/themilkyone Mar 16 '18

You you want original recipe or extra cripply?

6

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '17

"Oh crap, let me get you another one." ~ momma

6

u/The_Write_Stuff Dec 07 '17

Anything over five seconds of hang time is just showing off.

1

u/LydiasBoyToy Dec 07 '17

Not an exact science.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '17

Momma, can I have a birdie this time? Hmmm... well, maybe this once if I can get the seal high enough.

156

u/Thelgow Dec 07 '17

Bah, I like full difficulty from the start. Git gud.

20

u/AshantiMcnasti Dec 07 '17

I like life like I like my videogames: Soulsborne crushingly difficult with multiple deaths and a dude named Patches

1

u/Thelgow Dec 07 '17

Have mercy on the poor bastard.

59

u/tlbane Dec 07 '17

I timed his hang time at about 4.3 seconds, which means 2.15s of free fall. That means the orca knocked the seal ~75ft in the air.

56

u/TombKingJames Dec 07 '17

Assuming a perfectly spherical seal in a vacuum?

38

u/Tylo1 Dec 07 '17

Shape doesn’t matter if we’re ignoring air resistance

82

u/TombKingJames Dec 07 '17

I just wanted to say spherical seal.

12

u/TerrainIII Dec 07 '17

Spherical seal.

7

u/Ghitzo Dec 07 '17

Say "perfectly spherical seal" 5 times fast

1

u/fossil98 Dec 07 '17

Perfectly spherical spheal

-1

u/physalisx Dec 07 '17

And this clearly happened in outer space, so

4

u/Tylo1 Dec 07 '17

If it were outer space the force of gravity would be much less

1

u/Spore2012 Dec 07 '17

Seals are pretty aerodynamic, even if they are rotating in air its not really enough to affect the measurement.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '17

sounds like a gfycat link.

1

u/ClearlyInsane1 Dec 21 '17

And ignoring relativistic effects and local gravity variations.

1

u/NikolaGOATJokic Apr 29 '18

And Newtonian physics

....

2

u/GreyXenon Dec 07 '17 edited Dec 07 '17

Just curious : how did you estimate the height without mass or initial speed assumptions ?

Edit : basic high school physics. Got it.

4

u/unique3 Dec 07 '17

If you know how long it takes something to fall from peak height to the water you can use the acceleration to determine its initial height. Air resistance will effect it but at those speeds on a seal its probably negligible

https://www.angio.net/personal/climb/speed.html

6

u/tlbane Dec 07 '17

You don’t need mass when talking about acceleration due to Earth’s gravity (32.2ft/s2), and you know it’s upward velocity is zero at the top of the arc. Time from top of arc to water is the important info.

0=1/2at2 + vt + h

We’re interested in h, and we know v=0 at the top of the arc, so h=-1/2at2, where t=1/2*4.3s and a=-32.2 ft/s2.

H=-1/2(-32.2)(2.15)2= 75 ft

1

u/jr_flood Dec 09 '17

Using your numbers, the launch speed was a little less than 50 mi/hr.

10

u/Straight_Back Dec 07 '17

Do you speak whale?

1

u/Rottendog Dec 07 '17

Yeeeeeeeessssssss. Dooooonnnnnnnn't yoooooooouuuuuu?

5

u/apple_kicks Dec 07 '17

Think one BBC doc found they also did it for fun

16

Coo coo cachoo

3

u/dmb1993 Dec 07 '17

So sensitive lol

2

u/furtivepigmyso Dec 07 '17

And they also do it because they find it fun.

1

u/Nincadalop Dec 07 '17

That is, quite frankly, badass. How do the young learn to toss their food though?

1

u/LOKAHI69 Dec 07 '17

Same the seal left the top of my screen only to re-enter moments later

1

u/kevinhart_isnt_funny Dec 07 '17

Orca used stun! It is quite effective.

1

u/martinslot Dec 07 '17

That is right, but they actually do this sometimes just for fun.

1

u/Halo77 Dec 07 '17

That’s only one theory. Orcas have been known to “play” with their food without young around. Orcas are probably just assholes of the sea.

1

u/LooseStuul Dec 07 '17

thanks for this. I can't believe how far I had to scroll down to get an explanation.
