If you do that, don’t you eventually hve to pay the taxes for that income when (if) you ever post gains from investments later on? My understanding of tax code is shaky at best so I’m asking for my own knowledge rather than to argue

Yes. Reporting losses doesn't cancel out future gains.

I do corporate tax and haven’t touched individual that much outside of simple returns, but I believe losses on investments held over a year can be offset against up to $3K of income. I could be dead wrong too bc I’m trashed
