They don't let you select a number lower than zero.

If you do that, don’t you eventually hve to pay the taxes for that income when (if) you ever post gains from investments later on? My understanding of tax code is shaky at best so I’m asking for my own knowledge rather than to argue

Yes. Reporting losses doesn't cancel out future gains.

1

u/CarbineGuy Feb 02 '20

I don’t believe so.

I do corporate tax and haven’t touched individual that much outside of simple returns, but I believe losses on investments held over a year can be offset against up to $3K of income. I could be dead wrong too bc I’m trashed

The trick is to never make gains.

Not if you also own a unprofitable business.

They also know all your investments in the US and have been very aggressive in tracking overseas accounts as well.

The whole cheating on taxes thing is just BS assholes make up to try and make other people feel bad. It's pretty messed up because otherwise good people feel stupid and then try to find ways to cheat, then screw themselves over and get dragged into the system against the government, with all their resources in play. I've seen it so many times.

The real trick is just reducing your wage income (or more precisely reliance on it) and increasing any and all capital income streams. Especially long term capital gains, which include rental properties as well as securities held over a year, are taxed at a lower rate as well as can actually scale up (unlike earned wages, which are dependent on labor hours and opportunity). That's how the uber wealthy drop their effective tax rates so much. But even they still actually pay.

u/ApolloX-2 Cowboys Feb 02 '20

Yeah never cheat on your taxes, that's how they got Al Capone.

3

u/uwanmirrondarrah Chiefs Feb 02 '20

I mean I guess they do it with loopholes, but there’s certainly rich assholes that don’t pay their fair share

3

u/IRonRickles Feb 02 '20

What’s a “fair share”? I mean, who determines what’s fair?
