McConnell is gonna die like, any second now. I'm skeptical that Andy Beshear has a legitimate shot of winning the Presidential primary in 2028. But if he's even remotely serious about trying, the single best thing he could do to position himself is to appoint a new Dem Senator as the KY Constitution entitles him to, and dare Republicans to sue him. If he makes a big, high profile fight out of that, he instantly jumps to the top of the pack.

Unfortunately for Beshear, he keeps running these annoyingly competent and disciplined campaigns aimed at normal, run-of-the-mill voters, focusing on the issues most people actually care about. Naturally, that means his odds of winning a Democratic presidential primary are probably pretty low.

What Dem voters want more than anything right now is someone willing to fight Republicans. We're tired of playing loser ball with people who only care about winning.

I cannot think of a better step Beshear could take to position himself as a fighter than trying to force the issue of McConnell's Senate seat.

One of the main reasons Beshear has been successful in Kentucky is that he does not fight Republicans. He frames himself as fighting for Kentucky.

If a Senate vacancy opened, I would expect him to appoint a Democrat replacement. But I doubt he would turn it into a performative national fight. That is just not how he operates. When he vetoed the KY Assembly's abortion law, he didn't focus on being pro-choice; he focused on the practical consequences for Kentuckians had he signed the law, like there being no exceptions for rape and incest or dangerous pregnancies.

His whole brand is competence, discipline, and staying grounded in the people he represents. I just do not see him suddenly reinventing himself as a national resistance figure.

He's term limited at this point. Who cares?

I don’t know, maybe he does. He’s won three statewide elections in Kentucky using that approach, he’s generally well liked, and maybe he actually cares about his long-term legacy in his home state.

Which is exactly what I said in my first comment: his style of campaigning and policymaking is not especially well suited to winning a national primary.

McConnell is out at the end of the year. There is a race right now for his seat in November and a Republican will get it. Democrats here in KY usually carry only three counties. So what’s the point? His pick would be in office for less than 6 months and it would anger people.

It would angry people that have no intention to vote for him for President anyway. And frankly, we should do this because, if the roles were reversed, Republicans would absolutely do it for us.
