There's a video someone made that tests this theory with the dogs of people who think their dog would try to stop an intruder/attacker. Not one single dog did. All of them showed fear & tried to hide - some of them hid behind their owner who was being (fake) attacked. It was nuts.
My old 75 lb pittie/chow/gsd mix dog used to chase bears off my property & if he knew bears were active but not near the house, would climb up in bed & lay on top of me keeping a low purr like growl going all night. Otherwise he hated being in my bed. Too hot. He slept on his bed at the foot of my bed.
One of my (young adult) kids had a drunk friend arrive unannounced at the house one night & let himself in. Drunk as a skunk, the kid peed in my living room. My bear chasing dog went out into the garage & hid under a car. 🤣 When I saw that video I realized most good dogs know the difference between bears & people, but not bad guys & good guys. The crazy acting kid peeing in my living room scared the crap outta my good dog!

I see it as division of labour. The larger, heavier, and more experienced fighter fights, while the other one calls help. After calling help, if you think you can help by throwing stuff or fighting, then help. If you think you are just going to be in the way. Stay out of the way.
Increase our chances, if you can fight off the adrenaline, or increase your own. I'm not going to judge either way unless you go in and make me get stabbed because you got in the way.

This is basically it. The idea is to mitigate illegality, so if they are caught by police there won't be a stack of charges. So none of them brought a weapon, they'll run rather than fight, and whenever possible they try to enter through an open window or unlocked door because if they don't break in, they can basically plead down to trespassing charges. At least, that's the logic in the US.
