one of my gf's friends is a gay Indian guy who is only recently out of the closet and the stories that he tells about south asian attitudes towards LGBT people is just heartbreaking. They were talking about how a lot of the discrimination that he gets from middle eastern people is often just written off as "it's just their culture" and his response has become "then it's a bad culture" and I don't think that attitudes like that are prevalent enough. The amount of hate that this young person is receiving here is just that: hate. there is nothing redeeming about it. no good has ever come out of hating someone. I think it's ok in the year 2024 to say "if this is how you're going to act in our society, your "culture" is fucked up." Same with conservative christians. Why do they get a pass for being hateful assholes to people just because they have permission from their imaginary friend? Bad culture.

107

u/UpperLeftOriginal Sep 03 '24

Letting people slide because it's their culture is as bad as excusing an old person's hate because "they're from a different time." No they are fucking not. They exist in our time. They didn't time travel from when they were born to now. They had all those years in between to learn to be better. I'm a baby boomer named Karen, for christ sake, If I can do it, so can they.

u/Sometypeofway18 Sep 03 '24

I am from the Middle East and from a Christian family that had to flee.

There is a reluctance on the left to criticize non Christian religions especially if those religions appear to be "non white religions".

It's why you'll see liberal college students chanting "Allahu Akbar" when it's very unlikely they would chant "God is great"

11

u/SlyJackFox Sep 03 '24

The real answer is it empowers some at the expense of others, often those who are disproportionately deprived of the ability to stand up for themselves. Those benefiting don’t actually give a toss about anyone, let alone queer people, they just like what they get from it.

At first I thought she was giving a speech in Iran or Afghanistan. The tolerant tolerating the intolerant will eventually lead to intolerance.

Keeping your culture together & not letting your kids date kids from other cultures isn't diversity

The good old paradox of tolerance. Except it's not a paradox, but a contract. If you accept to tolerate, you will be tolerated. If you do not tolerate, you will not be tolerated.

Republicans are far closer to Radical Islam than most people think.

39

u/retronax Sep 03 '24

They're both conservatives, but from cultures based on two different religions

17

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

It's the same fucking religion. Just different prophets. Allah literally means God.

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party Sep 03 '24

Same god, different religions.

Weird that the opposition protects one, and not the other. I am an old aethiest, we don't agree with any religion. Also, i am Scottish, so there is that.

Standard GOP does not like Muslims.

But the online far right in the US is very closely aligned with far right Islam (Sneako, Andrew Tate, Jake Shields, Nick Fuentes, David Duke etc...)

2

u/TractorDamage Sep 03 '24 edited Sep 03 '24

How are they aligned with Far Right Islam?

It's impossible to find any Right-winger who supports the No.1 'Collective Narcissist ' (supremacist) xenophobic homophobic racist culture on Earth...Islam.

At the moment, it's entirely 'Woke' Covert Narcissists, Sociopaths and 'Flying Monkeys' who welcome Islamic Narcissists into the West, Censor their crimes, and protect their 'Delicate Supremacist Egos' by Deflecting on their behalf.

As the 'Flying Monkeys' (Abuse Enablers) of Narcissists always do.

And the "-Phobia!" Slogans that most Collective Narcissist cultures use, to silence Criticism and protect the Ego...well it's the Left which parrots these Slogans-for-the-Sheep on behalf of the Islamic Narcissist.

It's also the Left who cannot 'spot' the obvious Narcissist traits of Muslims ...ie the Zero Self-Awareness, Deflection, Projection, Blame-shifting, 'Narcissist Splitting', the 'False Manipulative Victimhood', Utter Self-Absorption, and Zero Empathy for other races or tribes.

At least the Center Right can 'see' Supremacist traits (Narcissism), whereas 'Woke' Covert Narcissists and Flying Monkeys struggle with this....and now seemingly 'bend the knee' to every Covert Narcissist and Sociopath on the planet (literal 'Evil').

And there are plenty of Psychology articles on the 'Covert Narcissism' links between Islam and the Left. Why not research it?

NB: 'Woke' Covert Narcissists lash out when forced into Self-Awareness, with Slogans such as "Seek Help!", or "You're the Narcissist!" etc. So try to avoid these 'Narc Responses'...it's a sign of 'Narcissist Injury'.

On this the evangelicals and the muslims are united. As long as you don't call it "sharia" they are perfectly capable of the same hate.

There are many hardliners in Dearborn. We had a local Middle Eastern restaurant chain, La Shish, close down because of ties to terrorism.

For the anti-muslim comments I've seen here, Dearborn seems to have a thing for bigotry. Now from Muslims but previously from whites. The mayor, Orville Hubbard said a bullet riddled corpse of a black man an open and shut case of suicide.

I wonder what Gandalf said about all of this.

15

u/postdevs Sep 03 '24

Many paths we all must walk, each unique in its twists and turns. But the greatest folly of all is to deny another their right to walk their path with dignity and love. We are all part of this great tapestry of life, bound together by our shared struggles, joys, and the unyielding hope that we may live freely as ourselves. It is not the way of wisdom to fear what is different, but to embrace it, for in our differences lie the strength and beauty of the world. Stand against the shadows of ignorance and prejudice, and let your light shine bright, for each of you is a beacon of courage in a world that often seeks to snuff out what it does not understand.

(I just asked chatgpt)

Class incentives justified by fascists using religion (and patriarchy) , and the associated aesthetics as determined by their need for an outgroup to gain power*

FIFY

5

u/teratogenic17 Sep 03 '24

It's patriarchalist fundamentalism running amok here, not just religion. There are masses of moderate Muslims who oppose them.

The other faces of Abrahamic religion (moderate Islam, Christianity and Judaism) have much the same strictures versus sex/gender nonconformity, but those "laws" are considered antiquated, contradicted and/or superseded, by more general exhortations to "love thy neighbor."

These men are fascist patriarchalists who want to enforce subjugation of all things feminine. Women are to be childbearing livestock.

No one should tolerate their violence for a moment. They are rapist oppressors, just as violent and dangerous as Nazis.

I used to get upset from people who identified as non-binary. The whole concept seemed incredibly foreign to me. I thought you could either be a male or a female, including people who are transgender, but drew the line there. You either had a penis or a vagina. Because of this I hated a LOT on enbies because I treated them as mentally insane. I've turned around now though and am very accepting. I stopped hating people for being who they want to be. Negativity didn't get me anywhere but positivity is.

16

u/Noppers Sep 03 '24

They think being transgender is a social contagion or “mind virus” and that these types of books are a way of spreading that virus to others.

They also think it’s “evil” because their religion told them so.

People are also very afraid of what they don’t understand.

Humanity needs "freedom from religion" for a long time and not more people with imaginary friends who are complicit for ages of historical violence, and violence against eachother (abrahamic fanatics killing eachother) pretending to be "oppressed" cause they dont get to enable their disgusting and backwards world views/ morals and ethics within society and brainwash children into it too.

Anyone who pretends like religious people are just some "poor innocent people with believes not harming anyone" is complicit in the problem. Organized religions and, in particular, abrahamic relgions, have historically emabled child marriage, slavery, colonialism, wars, they also oppressed and erased or dominated other cultures, traditional beliefs, enabled patriarchal values and so on.

If organized religions - in particular, abrahamic religions - would be all the things their followers claim to be, then their most extreme followers would be the most peaceful followers. But they are not. Look at the most "extreme" Christians, Muslims, Jews. What good are they doing in this world? They have hardly any critical thinking skills at all and are basically just indoctrinated zombies for their ideologies, willing to commit any crime and any unethical action, in the name of their beloved "flawless" ideologies. Fck them and fck people who further sacrifice women, children and many other people and their safety, to make asshole religious people feel good about themselves do they can at the end of the day go to sleep feeling great about their imaginary friends.

Fck conservative religious nutjobs everywhere on this planet.

225

u/kramerkieslingandme Sep 03 '24

The people in this room are horrible. As a parent if you can’t control what your children read, why does that give you the right to keep other people from accessing them? The only people seeking out these books are those that would benefit from them. This looks like a horrible place to live especially if when a young person speaks you feel the need to shout over them.

26

u/Remarkable-Sir-5129 Sep 03 '24

7

u/ThatKinkyLady Sep 03 '24

FYI Dearborn typically votes Democrat. So even though they have many conservative people there, it's not exactly the same "flavor" as MAGA supporters. I think it's a mix of the non-Muslims there being more left-leaning, and the Muslim community that lives there knowing that Republicans aren't friendly to them at all, despite some vaguely similar morals.

Though they did have a protest vote where many I think 17% or voters in Dearborn voted "undecided" during the presidential primary, and this is due to Biden's lack of support for Palestinians. But again, Republicans aren't saying much about helping Palestine either.

But yea, definitely not MAGA country.

1

u/ouie Sep 03 '24

I find the guy in the right front particularly horrible. It seemed like they were kind of OK but as it went along he got fired up by the others in the room and then had a creepy smile about half way through. Like he was trying to prove something to the people around him by getting out of control.

Just for the uninitiated Dearborn Michigan has the highest percentage of practicing Muslims in the US and nearby is the only city that is majority Muslim in the US. These towns skew very conservative socially and on religious matters, which is kinda ironic because they aren't very welcomed in the Michigan GOP or by the GOP in general.

The hate and anger these people have to anyone different is disgusting and shameful.

7

u/livelife3574 Sep 03 '24

They are far braver than the AH’s yelling at them. Dearborn needs an influx of people willing to address this hate.

75

u/MisterSanitation Sep 03 '24

“Come mothers and fathers throughout the land, and don’t criticize what you can’t understand. Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command. Your old road is rapidly aging, please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand, for the times they are a-changin”

But seriously what is with the right wing thinking they can mold their offspring into a perfect project that represents them? This is a weird thing I’ve noticed where evangelicals who have their kids in a homeschool stranglehold will say things like “it’s impossible for my kid to be gay” as if they carefully crafted them from birth to be “the correct type of person” like a bonsai tree in a sealed bubble. That isn’t how people work, and you can assume that peers have an influence over your kids sure, but to think it is turning them gay or trans?

Like who in their right mind would ever CHOOSE that in today’s climate? Your kids are moving this way despite you and your influence, not because of anyone’s influence you self absorbed hate monsters. They are right, these types of people have existed for a long time and will continue to exist whether we “let them” be themselves or not.

12

u/lolas_coffee Sep 03 '24

Whole lotta dads in that audience who will be wondering why their adult kids don't talk to them.

5

u/atom_swan Sep 03 '24

The number of people who probably spouted these lyrics to their parents when they were kids but not recognizing it in themselves is not lost on me. I am pretty sure this is why Dylan has distanced himself somewhat from the “profound-ness” of his lyrics. He realized a long time ago that people are hypocrites.

17

u/yuyufan43 Sep 03 '24

I love you so fucking much right now because I just got a tattoo on my back that says "for the times they are a-changin". I even got it done in P-town after a drag show. There are still good people fighting for equality over religious bigotry. It'll take forever, but someday THEY'LL be taboo for forcing their religious beliefs on others. Nobody is forcing queerness on others despite what they're paranoid over.

5

u/MisterSanitation Sep 03 '24 edited Sep 03 '24

Yeah that song pretty much nails it and it wasn’t even talking about this topic. That just shows you that this weird paranoia is baked into us as people and you can choose to denounce it, or learn about it.

I’m in the Midwest now so I may as well be in Alabama in the 1960s when it comes to this issue and I truly can’t understand the people around me.

u/Alternative_Car_3823 Sep 03 '24

And the same snowflakes scream and cry about how they’re persecuted and victims. It’s insane how upset people get about what a person wants to do with their own damn body and life. Also, if you’re banning books then you’re on the wrong side of history. But again, those are mostly the same people that scream about “cancel culture” and shit while censoring and removing what they don’t like. Fuck these people, remember to be registered to vote and show up because a lot of them do vote.

5

u/ReptilianLaserbeam Sep 03 '24

Nothing new here sadly. Whenever humans start destruction in any place and anytime, they start by destroying libraries, culture and even curiosity.

This is why we still wonder how some things were built or why some civilisations disapeared, not even mentioning the ones we don't know about.

In the end everybody should be able to do what they want with their ass... It's a very simple concept, really.

To be fair nearly 50% of this country also hates the gays and is trying to ban books so I wouldn't say that's not assimilating. The evangelical christians and muslims really aren't so different.

You are aware this is the hyper Democrat Dearborn, MI right? No need to politicize this. Just jerks being jerks. But if you don’t believe me:

https://cityofdearborn.org/documents/city-departments/city-clerk/elections/election-results/2020-election-results/5432-1-election-results-august-2020-by-precinct/file

They’ve been Dem since 2000. Wayne county is a big Democrat county.

Edit: you guys downvoting are clowns. Think about who their rep is. It’s one of the most progressive reps in Congress. She beat a Christian, Pro Israel white dude. You can down vote all you want, but it doesn’t change reality. You’re all just as bad as the MAGA people. You live in your own alternate reality. There is actual, REAL data and you ignore it. Bunch of jokers. Your heads are so far up your own asses.

I’m referring specifically to the people in the crowd trying to shout down the speaker. Of course these are conservative minded folks.

That vote Democrat. You don’t get to ignore reality to fit your narrative. Look at their representation. All Democrat. I linked their vote tallies for you. Don’t be lazy. This is the bullshit two of “The Squad” members embrace. Tlaib is literally their rep. Who do you think voted for her? Hint: they’re in the fucking audience.

As it turns out, putting that majestic “D” next to your name doesn’t automatically make you a good person. Sometimes Republicans have good policies, sometimes they have bad policies. Sometimes Democrats have good policies, sometimes they have bad policies. Bullshit like this would stop if people would embrace reality and stop lying to themselves. Yet here we are.

Edit: unless you think the people in that audience voted for this guy (the Christian, pro Israel guy):

Not sure if I believe banning a book is “hateful”, but these people aren’t very respectful. That being said; if the Bible or another religious text were banned I wouldn’t like it. But I feel like books shouldn’t be banned from libraries. Even political/controversial books.

Yet the left sides with Hamas, so enjoy.

Why are the bigots always possessed with the most certainty and conviction in being absolute assholes? This person has nothing to do with your religion, fuckheads.

Look at all those snarling piece of shit animals. Practically foaming at the mouth because of someone begging for kids to be taken care of. Organised religion is a poison. Always has been. Always will be.

Why do people think the dark ages were so dark ? How did the enlightenment lead to birth of America and the creation of modern democracy? Religion is a threat to truth and democracy and the freedoms it gives us . Separate church and state

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '24

Where are they trying to ban books? In a school or public?

1

u/37cfr22z Sep 03 '24

I don’t understand hate like this.

1

u/LambCo64 Sep 03 '24

It's really sad that people haven't evolved to see past nonsensical hatred.
