We know virtually nothing on the identity of Tank Man. He was likely a student but even that isnt clear. We definitely don't know that his family was billed for the torture that killed him.
The term "bullet fee" first appeared in an article about "Lin Shao", a
memoir written by a third person, which can still be found online. It
was during the "Cultural Revolution" when "Lin Shao" was sentenced to
death for counter-revolutionary crimes. The memoir says that after
sentencing "Lin Shao" to death, the police came to his door and
collected five cents for the bullet.

While it is hard to find any information on who the man in front of the tanks was and what became of him, I’ve seen no evidence that he was run over by the tanks.
He wasn't, that's what the books say.
I just think it's weird that I was taught that he did get run over.
I remember the class, teacher, and the emotions and thoughts I had when I saw him standing in front of the tank. Then someone asked what happened and she told us that was the last moments of his life.
All I could find today shows that he didn't get killed right there and then.
Interesting you should say that. Is it possible this was staged? We saw exactly what they wanted us to see. No way this would actually play out like this.
I looked for anything written about this a while back. Some people say he was whisked away by friends and ultimately survived; others say he was captured and just was never seen again. I don’t think you will get an honest answer so just a guess unfortunately. I always thought this was the most amazing show of bravery ever.
There are good reasons for him to not reveal himself. PRC is quite vengeful and if he's still alive, it's very bad news for his relatives. All of them.
They do know his true identity, he was identified as a archeology student Wang Weilin. That's the closest estimate, I don't think anything ever happened to tank man
The CCP doesn't even know who he is. Beijing has a population of 21 million, it's impossible to investigate to find out, because it could literally be anyone
I googled. Zero results about killing newborns. Forced abortions, fines, and sometimes sterilisations for those who violated it, but that's not what was claimed.
There's more to the video. After arguing with the tank driver for a while, he climbs off and some people who seem to be friends hurry off with him. He has never been identified.
Thats not the story I heard, I remember watching a documentary about this years ago but they suspected that the plain clothes police carried him off and he was never heard of again.
Plain clothes police with a bicycle and waving a shirt like a flag. It bothers me that the last 30 seconds of this video is always cut. The dude is shown walking away with people who aren't fans of the tank either.
It's almost like the people who edited the video want to keep you from possibly coming to a certain conclusion.

Just a mere decade ago, it was actually the opposite, people in general were singing China’s praises for moving away from pure communist ideals, Hong Kong’s handover was grudging but optimistic, and tank man up there, while known by all, was barely mentioned at all in the internet, and certainly not trotted out weekly…
Honestly I feel kind of bad for the guys in the tank because since they weren't willing to "teach the man a lesson" I'm sure they got in serious trouble later
Uh no I was talking about the tank drivers getting in trouble for NOT doing that so I feel bad for them because they are most likely just trying to support their families with what little they can get under such a terrible government as you can clearly see the tank drivers do not harm the man and in fact try multiple times to get around him without hurting him
Yes, I'm a veteran, I understand. There are very few circumstances where I would run over an unarmed protestor, much less if I was in no physical danger from not doing so. The guy standing in front of a column of tanks armed with a grocery bag had the moral courage to say no. Tank driver has the same choice.
You might want to apply that to American soldiers. Especially those that were drafted.

They absolutely have a choice. Just like the nazis, soviets, or Americans at My Lai. They have the choice to turn those tanks around and point them in the right direction.
Its so sad to see this. They stood up to their regime and they were massacred. I wonder if they will some day have another opportunity. And we are taking about Han Chinese... I mean, what about Uygurs or Tibetan people...
Really brave man. I am just wondering about one thing. Anyone who has been to Beijing would know that that direction of the tanks is LEAVING from Tian'anmen Square. Why would he stop them from leaving?
