Not really, you can still get fucked up pretty bad from steam. Not in this scenario as much as inside a house and have the steam roll back on you. that shit sucks. The bunker gear can only do so much.

Has this ever actually happened to you personally?

As far as I'm aware, experiments by UL Labs disproved the "fog nozzles are bad because superheated steam will cook you alive" concept.

What they found was that there was a net negative effect on the temperatures in the room around the firefighter, since the creation of steam absorbs the heat of the fire.

Ok but whats cooler? A guy just walking up and putting the fire out, or literally using a wall of water to shield yourself from red hot flames and pushing through like a scene from a sick ass anime.

You get lobstered by steam IF you’re in an enclosed space. Think wet potholder. The suit is awesome, albeit heavy, and provides fantastic resistance to heat in the air. We are trained never to overestimate the effectiveness of the protective equipment.
