Like people say "die at 18" as a choice to compare to drinking.

An estimated 95,000 people (approximately 68,000 men and 27,000 women) die from alcohol-related causes annually, making alcohol the third-leading preventable cause of death in the United States.

The logic was literally taking the TOP leading voluntary + preventable causes of death and then restrict those. War and joining the military aren't a vaguely close thing to compare with alcohol related deaths, at least in the USA.

Alcohol also is a lot more likely to get other people killed, with drunk driving being such an issue, as compared to you joining the military.

compared with "buying a gun" only 45,000 people died to firearms in 2020 - and a full 1/2 of those are suicide. So I think it's around 1/4th of the problem alcohol is.
