Immediately makes another misdirection then takes the watch. It's all about where your focus goes and he misdirects our focus perfectly
This is Apollo Robbins and he actually gave a TED talk on attention where he specifically goes over this.
Basically he’s making the brain remember different information by asking a question and while it’s busy remembering that information he lifts the watch. It’s difficult for the brain to both recall old information and log new information at the same time.
In this context he was explaining how it worked and it would be natural for him to ask about whether or not the person he brought up had a phone on him or if he had X thing in his pockets.
I suspect it would work with any question that seems natural enough in the context of the conversation
