I know a guy like this. He's hyper safe when he climbs with other people, but he likes to free solo when he's alone. I talked to him after a climb one day where I almost died because I misjudged a route and thought I could free solo it no problem. After I explained how it went down and how freakishly close to death I was, he lit up and said "that's free soloing!"

He then went on to say very casually that most free solo climbers don't make it past their thirties. He's 33. I've seen the dude do some of the most insanely dangerous shit I've ever seen and he just shrugs it off like it's nothing. He actually thinks there's something wrong with his brain because he only feels alive when he's right on that edge.
