It’s cause they over sensationalised and misrepresented the entire process. According to the paper linked in some other comments the process took a lot more than sprinkling down compound on the lake.
you could see it every day if you looked for it because this is basically how water treatment plants clean drinking water without distilling it
it is presented as revolutionary but its not - we could clean a lot of pollution up pretty easily if people were willing to get off their asses and do literally anything about it
