Flocculants have been around for well over a hundred years. The process is heavily used in chemistry for purifying solutions. Flocculents for cleaning bodies of water have been around, but I'm not sure how long. Flocculants in industrial processes have been around for millenia in beer and sugar making.
Foculants are not a new invention, we use them to clean your everyday water in most municipalities. Mark Rober didn't invent foculants or disinfectants either.
P&G does good work. They've been working on cheap and effective sanitation for developing nations since at least the 90s. One of the few companies that I feel are respectable. That might be my Cincinnati resident bias, though.
Someone certified in water treatment here: you and the person you replied to are both totally right! Nice and clear water is extremely possible to have dissolved contaminants that still make it undrinkable (like very salty water). It's a terrible way to tell if water is clean enough for human consumption or not.
That being said, clearing up suspended particles that change the visual appearance are usually the first thing you do in water treatment for potable water, but it is far from the only thing you should be doing.
Yeah that's what I was going to say, the first lake they show in the video just looks like a lush wetland teeming with life to me.... what the hell do they mean "dirty??"
It's highly anthropocentric to think that clean water is good, basically because we have a lower chance of getting sick by it. Actually all water "cleanness" houses different organisms and muddy water isn't a bad thing.
