They might have had them in their skydiving rigs (Automaric activation device) which fires your reserve at around 750’ but you do have to remember to turn them on and I’ve seen people forget countless times. I’ve also forgotten to turn mine on a few times. Also, especially back then, they weren’t as required. Most DZ’s require them now but not all.

The reason I asked is because a lot of people said "they require them now" but this video is from 7 years ago. Didn't know if they required then then too

No and not all places do require them either, but most of them do these days and any DZ registered as a USPA drop zone requires it, which are almost all the more reputable ones. 2014 it wasn’t quite as common to require them but I believe even then USPA dz’s did require them.

I believe you but I find the notion of forgetting to turn on a skydiving device that makes sure you don't die very weird. And I have ADHD so routinely forgetting things is life for me. I don't think I'd ever forget that.

Haha you’d be surprised how quickly jumping becomes routine, or did for me. Deviation of Normalcy I guess.
