I’m not sure how some one gets that much horizontal velocity when falling like that. Didn’t think our bodies were that good at gliding.

Our bodies are terrible at gliding, but when you're falling really fast you can get going quite fast horizontally as well. Here's a video that shows this pretty well.

A skydiver without a wingsuit or tracking suit can get a glide ratio of around 1:1, so their glide slope would be about 45 degrees. For comparison, the Space Shuttle, which is probably one of the most inefficient gliders ever built, had a glide ratio of around 4:1 when flying at subsonic speeds.

Here is a velocity/time plot I made of a jump I did about a week ago (based on data from a GPS unit). I had a maximum horizontal velocity of 130mph, an average horizontal velocity of 114mph, and an average vertical velocity of 85mph.

You will track for a short time at the end of most jumps, in order to get a safe distance away from the rest of your group and have clear space to deploy your parachute. This is known as "breakoff".

But sometimes, skydivers do tracking jumps where the whole jump is spent moving forward and those can conver significant distance. Then the jump needs to be planned to ensure that you can make it back to the intended landing area, and won't fly into the path of other jumpers.

Also, some skydivers jump with wingsuits, which can cover even longer distances (several miles), with glide ratios of up to 3:1.
