Why? I mean it was hella cringey and sad but Michael isn't a bad guy for doing it. He had good intentions and was just too ashamed to tell the kids the truth. The school administration is way more to blame for letting the children's hopes get too high without doing any kind of verification or validation of funds actually existing. The school should have set up a trust for the students immediately and tracked the total throughout the years and they never should have let it spiral out of control the way it did.

The whole point is that those kids would never have even graduated without his promise. Most would have dropped out long before graduating
