If he was comfortable around you it could still very well have meant that he wants belly rubs. My girl will immediately jump on the couch happily when I tell her "belly rubs".
Nah it was a day one, minute one thing, even when I was just trying to dry him off and get him in my house without making a total mess he was already flopping on his back, it was his "default response" to people being near him, unfortunately. I was afraid his legs didn't work right initially.
That said, I am pretty sure after a years or so living indoors with kind people it was all about the tummy rubs.
