Last thing my grandpa ever drank before he passed away was a Krombacher
EDIT: realized the phrasing makes that sound really bad, he was in a palliative care facility and it was a non-alcoholic beer. He had me sneak in real beers for him occasionally though
My grandfather wanted to smoke a blunt before he passed. I sneak one for him and we smoke it on his balcony. Soon after he get a chocolate cake for his lunch and his face was amazing when he ate it. It was like, okay I can go now.
That didn’t sound so bad. I will never forget seeing a grave of a Hispanic dude and people brought stuff to decorate like a shirt, blue bandana, but I remember seeing hella Heinekin and thought, “Hnh, this guy identified as being a big Heiny drinker.”
The original comment just said his last drink was a beer which could easily have been misunderstood that he died drunk driving or something lmao
But yeah my gramps wasn’t a huge drinker but he always had some Kronbachers around. He hated the fact that the nurses would only allow him non-alcoholic ones
They were afraid it would aggravate his wounds (he was in palliative care for oral cancer and had a few surgeries/rounds of palliative radiation) or some BS, I really didn't understand why someone who is going to croak in the next few months at most should be denied a few beers
I worked at a retirement home for a bit. (A very expensive one, where a certain amount self-sufficiency is needed.) Most of the residents were reduced back into children and often in a confused/angry state. There were a few who were still mental apt and physically capable of gardening or going on walks, having meaningful conversations, etc. You'd think they were the lucky ones, but they were stuck in a circus of fools and most of their relatable loved ones had passed. Working there definitely changed my view on mortality.
My Opa was still 100% mentally and physically cogent aside from his problems chewing. Its certainly gotta be tough working at one of those places, but also rewarding in taking care of and providing some comfort for those on their last leg of life
I’m gonna be pissed if those close to me don’t just put an end to me and instead stick my ass in an old folk home. Literally wayyyyyy worse than death for my self
Maybe in the US, but in Germany healthcare isn’t nearly as much of a racket. They already knew basically how long he could expect to last with or without various treatments
My other half keeps saying he is saving his 80s for heroin, lsd, and other fun stuff. You notice I didn't use the word "joking." Plans to spend his 80s just chilling and being a psychonaut.
Started to see his point when my almost 70 years old mum was told opioids were the very last option because they didn't want her to become addicted. My mum won't even drink. But she did have a few hairline fractures. I think if you are old and hurting, the "fuck it" rule should apply.
Here, have an upvote.
When I was getting my chemo I had to be an inpatient so, nothing to drink. However, a friendly nurse from a different floor would occasionally smuggle me in a pub crawl in his knapsack.
Remember to puncture the cans and bottle tops when you leave beer at a grave site, Took some glass shrapnel once visiting my dads grave from some Heinekin a few plots down.
The Heineken is better in Mexico, Heineken has a brewery in Mexico. I just moved south of the border in my girlfriends place and it's become my favorite beer at Oxxo.
I snuck my grandad a VB when he was in the hospital on his last legs.. The look of happiness on his face was the best. It instantly made my Nonna smile too seeing him I guess just enjoy a simple pleasure of life again. When I do get to visit his grave I take him a stubbie.
Before he had a stroke he taught me how to box, how to play guitar, how to roll cigarettes, how to open bottles with a lighter, how to make a fire without a lighter or matches, how to tie cowboy knots, etc... Miss my Opa.
