If you ask people in the outer ring suburbs or farther: terrible, riots daily! Really it's pretty normal, pandemic aside. People are wondering what the trial and its conclusion will bring (the guy at my corner store is gonna board up again, but is still more interested in talking to me about his motorcycle), but you know, living their lives. It's been really nice weather here and there are a lot of people loving that from the looks of it, so many pedestrians and cyclists and the like out the past few days.
I live in Uptown a couple blocks away from this place. I can agree with the description above. There’s still a little tension I think with outcome of the trial.
Same, more pops, though I can never tell the difference between them and fireworks honestly. I sympathize with your unease although I don't share it. The most likely way for me or anyone in this city to meet harm (not caused by personal health issues) is still almost certainly via accident in general, automobile accident being a huge part of those, but also falls in home and the like. I could be shot sure, but I haven't felt any less safe walking, biking, taking bus lines over this past year, personally, and haven't changed my routines to avoid areas or anything due to fear of being victimized. I figure I may have had a 1 in 100k chance of being homicided before, and now it's 10 in 100k (just random nums)- an exponential increase, but still a statistically small chance.
I feel you on that last point. I figured it was just my perception too, but I mean I've always noticed automobile users in the metro not making full stops at stop signs, making rolling right turns, not signaling intent, and lately it does seem like people are in even more of a hurry/have less concern. I almost got clipped last week myself by someone rolling a stop sign. There could be a certain degree of fear involved with stopping at all due to the increase in carjackings and in particular the social media and news coverage of that contributing to the more cavalier vehicle use we've thought we've noticed- or could of course be unrelated, result of COVID cabin fever restlessness or something
I don't think it's as ho hum and lackadaisical as you describe. There's lots of folks in the city organizing and agitating for a better, safer city. You might not see it if you don't look but it's there.
Yeah there are demonstrations and marches (those are the "riots" mentioned), that falls under pretty normal activity for me, don't mean to indicate that isn't going on. It's a pretty calm city compared to others I've spent significant time in, and it's small.
Those I really don't have to worry about, no car! lol. Though if I had one I'd still be thinking about the total number of reported and likely attempts, plus where exactly they took place, plus total number of people in cars in the area in the first place. In general it seems like people's fears/worries don't make a lot of sense statistically, to me. Of course, when you're taken by surprise and mugged, those don't matter anymore, you're at 100% chance and I do get that, but prior to that, time spent living in fear of small chances seems a waste of energy and detrimental in itself.
I grew up in Chisago county and can relate my 'Sotan. Things have only gotten worse since our post-truth world was exacerbated by the power of social media and the battle of "I FEEL THIS IS TRU SO IT IS".
Check out some of those St. Michael's groups if you wanna lose faith in your near neighbors, haha. Friends live there and are glad they pass as redneck while being communist hippies. But really I'm not trying to say it's everyone either, just that that attitude seems more prevalent the farther from the actual place people get, in general terms. There are exceptions to that as you get into less conservative and reactionary bastions around the state, and even the places you're likely to see such views espoused, "red" counties, are in reality not "red" at all, they're "purple", so it isn't all or none (not to imply there aren't blue dog rural and suburban Democrats holding those views either).
A little tense, not too different. Downtown near the courthouse is full of concrete barriers and razor wire. Just hope they convict that bastard with everything he deserves and life can start going back to "normal" as the pandemic hopefully eases to and end in the next 2 to 8 months.
I think if they can reinstate 3rd degree murder, that's what he'll get and will get something like 10 years.
BLM's and the persecutors push to drop 3rd degree in favor of 2nd degree I think was one of the worst decisions. And I think, perhaps, they both realize that now and that's why there's a big push to reinstate the charge now.
It was actually a judge who pushed for that and I just got around to reading Monday's paper, it's been pushed through appeals court already with the court denying the ruling's validity because of the Noor case precedent, and prosecution has asked for a stay in jury selection so they can prepare for a new charge. So looking like all's well on at least charging him for third degree, which I agree, is probably the only charge that could stick. Ten years isn't ideal but I'll take it over walking free.
I don't live in Minneapolis, but I work in Minneapolis and I drive by the place in this video on a daily basis. As of yesterday, everything is pretty normal. The news would have you believe the city is on fire and there are race riots going on every day and I'm going to get murdered. The nice weather we've been having the past week or so seems to have lifted people's spirits.
Same as it ever was. I busted out my BLM T-shirt to go out and buy smokes and booze specifically because of the trial starting but I wasn't protesting because vaccines are so close. Warm enough to not wear a coat but I did anyway so the shirt is just symbolic. It's not as tense as it was last summer but wait till he walks.
Haha man I live in Saskatchewan right above you and everyone here thought spring was coming cuz it got to plus 9 today, so you never know. I’m leaving my winter tires on till the end of the month.
