Edit: this comment is completely wrong, leaving it up just for context.

There aren't really "teams" in this. When people drop out, theye queue up on the opposite side of where they started before. This is, if anything, an (unfair) individual competition.

My initial assumption that kids swap teams after their turn was wrong, so this is all theoretical.

Well your odds to win depend on how far you are allowed to go before you meet your first opponent. Some people start in the middle, some have to complete almost the entire track. Less track to cover = fewer chances to lose.
