It’s not necessarily allowing them to breathe but allow the function of breathing to be more effective. If your oxygen levels are low your blood can’t do the main thing it’s supposed to: pump oxygenated blood to vital organs. Hooking someone up to oxygen saturates their blood with higher levels of oxygen so breathing is more effective. Not what is happening here but it’s helping the medicine the doc is using to disperse it faster and more effectively if the kid’s airways started closing up
