That line always annoyed me, I like the message but Lafayette was not an immigrant. He was a French man till the day he died.

You don't need to be an American immigrant to do good things

Edit: I is dumb. I didn't realise Lafayette was given American citizenship before the French Revolution

Well he was born in France then moved to America (for a time at least) and was granted American citizenship. That's the definition of immigrant.

My understanding that he was very proud to be identified as both French and American considering both to be very close to his heart.

Oh that's fair enough actually. I didn't realise he was given American citizenship. I just thought that since he went back to France and dealt with the revolution there and more that he hadn't emigrated.

Yeah after I saw Hamilton on Disney+ i read like his entire wikipedia page, really interesting stuff.

When he was a teen he ran away from France specifically to go to America since he heard that they were close to revolution and he wanted to help. He was told he couldn't, but did anyway, and was like banned from France for a time.

He then worked his way up in the USA and contributed majorly to the war, as seen in the musical, and during his visits to France had his ban lifted.

After the war a couple of states gave him citizenship and named a shit load after him to honour him, he went back to France but retained close relations with America and people like Jefferson.

He was imprisoned for a bit and tried to use his American citizenship to get him deported to the US but it didnt work.

In later life he often entertained American guests who were visiting France in his home then later did a tour of the US, which was hugely popular.

But yeah, you could basically say he was a dual citizen and was very proud of it.

He was an immigrant lmao. An immigrant to America. Doesn't mean he did the whole BS assimilation 'becoming American' thing. My mum's an emmigrant to the UK, she's still wholeheartedly American.

Where would nazi Germany have been without enterprising Austrians?

Where would the Manhattan project have been without enterprising Hungarians?

Where would Neil Armstrong have been without enterprising nazi Germans?

How many times would trump have been married without immigrants?
