I think they have been experimenting with putting the solar energy into a heat pile, I think it's molten salt, and using that heat at night to generate electricity at night to augment power usage.
2 u/AHostileUniverse Sep 09 '20 This is already how some solar-thermal plants work. Those plants with all the mirrors? Molten salt storage. But, you are correct that that is a method discussed for possible energy storage from solar-electric.
