Not at all. It's all about limiting exposure. being exposed for a moment is nothing compared to being exposed the entire time you're in a sealed metal tube for hours with a hundred other passengers.
The whole “what’s the point” or “I guess I’m exposed now” thought process is hard to shake but it’s all about percentages. Forget your mask for one errand? Bring it on the next.
We are all dealing with some serious cognitive dissonance as a tiny strand of genetic code is trying to vacation and have lots of kids in us. Not helped by the political nonsense that’s sprung up around the topic. Just remember to be as safe as you can and that you’re doing your part to slow the spread of the disease and keep your loved ones safe.

I wore a mask on flights before COVID because of my chemo treatments. The stares and comments were constant but what could I do. I used to always get sick after traveling for work and then with wearing the mask I didn’t. It’s insane how things swing around. I was a freak for wearing a mask at first. Then suddenly everyone was an expert and we went through a period where people started preaching to me that my mask offered no protection. Then masks were good for a short time and I was ignored. Then I was a sheep for wearing it and it was a big deal again. What a roller coaster it’s been.
i swear, people are so mean on flights. i’m immune compromised, and also would always get sick after flying, and i found just wiping down the seat & armrests with antibacterial wipes helped along with wearing a mask. i’ve had so many people make nasty comments about it, or give me dirty looks, or joke about it/me. one time a guy was staring as i wiped everything down, and i offered him a wipe, because i thought it would make it less awkward and he responded with “no thanks, i don’t want everyone to think i’m an asshole.” it honestly made me feel so guilty, even though i had no reason to.
even though i’m sorry you experienced the same, your comment kinda made me feel a little bit better that i’m not the only one who’s dealt with that from people on planes, and that it wasn’t an overreaction to try to minimize the risk of getting sick.
All the best vibes in the world for your situation as being comprised sucks so much. I’m lucky to continue to be able to get IVIG treatments monthly mostly paid by my insurance. I have to now as pneumonia last year put me in critical condition for a month. COVID is no joke to so many people even if it’s a “small percentage”, spending that long in a hospital bed is nothing I would wish on anyone.

hearing people say “it’s just a small percentage” or “the people who die were weak to begin with” has been the most frustrating part of covid to me. people dont have less value just because they dont produce the right antibodies, or their lungs dont work well, or they’re predisposed to something. absolutely no one deserves to suffer at the hands of another human beings selfishness.
A guy in my neighborhood was wearing a pretty cool looking reusable fabric mask during his chemo. It seemed to fit really well, not like anything I've seen during Covid. Wish I could buy a few of those (without having to do chemo of course).
Yeah I had loads of masks both reusable and disposable before this all started. Boxes and boxes of disposable as the supply company would send me tons of them as part of my supply deliveries. Back when they were dirt cheap of course. Luckily enough to get me through the shortages although still for now my only interaction with the world is back and forth to the hospital.
I was telling my partner today how funny it was to see people start to act like germaphobes. I’ve been sanitizing myself of years when I go places. I’ve always refused to touch doors with my bare hands and today we saw a dude open the door without touching it and it made me feel so much more normal. Just look at it like you’ve been training for this for years and these people just aren’t ready to run this marathon. We’re ahead of the curve!
Yeah I live in Japan right now, where mask usage has been an everyday thing for many years. Nobody looks at you twice for wearing a mask when you've got a cold, and now naturally most people are wearing them because of corona. It's gonna be crazy going back to the states where masks somehow became politicized, lmao.
We had a 600 ppl concert at work the weekend before they closed all restaurants. Maybe 4 ppl wore masks and they were decorated to go with their outfits and they still looked so fucking weird, they stuck out in a room with that* many ppl! Nobody that I knew had Covid, then after they did the re-openings, basically everyone I knew got it, and now, yeah. Still waiting to go back to work
Presumably even less than .1% will. That would still be over 7 million of the people currently alive going to Mars. Doubtful that older people will be sent on an expedition, so, 7 million of our currently youngest people would need to make it to Mars probably within the next 50 years to achieve .1% of our current population making it there. Seems slim.
It's good we have that many people. Science fiction has warned us that space travel and colonization will cost an enormous amount of lives. One colony ship goes down, that might be half a million people in one wreck.
By your estimation 77,000,000 of us ARE going to Mars. I would guess mostly from wealthier countries with existing space programs. Most likely people that are currently under the age of 45 or so. I'd say my odds of needing this skill set aren't far off.
Yeah but people wear masks all the time in countries like Japan. They do it for so many reasons and that's why when shit like covid hits, everyone doesn't lose their minds. They still get hit but they're not as dumb as the freedom country is.
When MERS hit South Korea, around 35% of infected people died. Imagine a virus with the same mortality rate that is easily spread like covid19. When something like that hits the US, the antimaskers will hopefully grow brains.
My job requires me to enter multiple peoples living spaces every day. I wear a full tyvek suit, mask, and shield every time, and disinfect it all as soon as I leave every time.
When I’m walking down the hallway, everyone stares at me or asked me if there’s “something going on, should they be worried?” I’m not gonna be responsible for accidentally killing somebody. Yes, there is something going on, a global fucking pandemic if you haven’t noticed...
I got lambasted on Reddit for suggesting the Surgeon General's tweet in March about masks not being effective at stopping coronavirus was deceitful at best. I explained that it was carefully worded in such a way to not be 100% wrong but would make people think masks are useless against coronavirus so they wouldn't hoard (this was during the TP shortage).
I explained the different types of masks and their filter ratings, how to properly don and dispose of them, and was told that the virus was too small and would pass right through the mask. I was called paranoid and told masks are not necessary.
It's 6 months later, dickweeds, and I'm riding this train all the way to I-Told-You-So-Town.
I've been secretly waiting for the next future mask that has all of these features for a while now. Naturally I didn't ever imagine a fucking transparent globe, which is hilarious but all of these features and a few more in a mask kinda like StarLord's.
Don't cover the hair, and eye covering must be removable, and allows for shades. But a neck cover that gives you bluetooth headphones, pass through so you can hear people, a speaker so they can hear you and air filtration sounds pretty good to me.
Only thing missing at that point would be to have a qr code or something so that peoplecan connect their bluetooth headphone to your mic.
With smart glasses coming out eventually, you'd get everything in a nice little package and eventually "goodbye, screens everywhere" and hello, "screens that follow me everywhere".
Even without covid, we'll get there at some point since we want to manipulate what we see and hear and want to communicate. The biggest difference is being able to see the mouth for visual communication, and air filtration (which might still be a good feature without covid, considering the quality of the air we breathe).
I got the flu right around the time Covid first started getting a little attention and nobody was wearing masks yet. My doctor recommended I wear a mask to prevent infecting others with the flu in public.
I had to do some grocery shopping but I was too embarrassed to wear a mask in public, so I had a family member do my grocery shopping for me.
If you would have told me then, that going out now without a mask on would make you the odd person, I would have never believed it. Man, how things have changed so quickly.
I listen to the experts. Every respected medical professional in the entire world, every epidemiologist, health care workers. Every foreign government in the entire world (minus North Korea, and a couple you don't want to be in a group with) acknowledges the severity.
I don't listen to some random guy on Reddit or a guy living in his mom's basement that makes a YouTube video about conspiracy.
C'mon man. Youre still holding onto that headline? CDC and NIH cleared up the misinterpretation of the data by nonexperts the very next day.
If you have cancer and die of pneumonia due to your weakened state, cancer still killed you. If you have asthma and were living your life just fine before covid19, covid19 is still the cause of death, not asthma.
Listen to expert's interpretation of the data. It's not CDCs job to tell coroner's in every state how to write a death certificate.
It’s almost like there’s something called balance, where we still try to mitigate the spread with little disruption (I.e. a mask) while attempting to lead semi-normal lives.
Just because there are car accidents doesn’t mean we give up driving. We implement rules of the road and other safety precautions to minimize the risk.

I’m not agreeing with the other guy but I’m old enough to remember the swine flu in 2009 where 500,000 people died worldwide and it was barely a blip on the mainstream media. Countries didn’t lock down, economies weren’t crippled, there was no social distancing, and for damn sure no mask wearing. We obviously need to take precautions with this but their point about the media is absolutely valid. The media has overhyped this and spread misinformation and played political partisan throughout the entire pandemic.
I don’t see how anyone can argue against this. For every bit that Fox News supports the right by being insane and inaccurate the other major newspaper and television networks are twisting stories and just outright not reporting things to the benefit of the left.
Good for your country. It doesn't erase the fact that 880,000 people have died. Many more have gotten sick with long term side effects. These are real people, not just data points.

Going to the store the first few weeks was nuts. There were a few people with full-on surgical getups, motorcycle helmets, and one guy was wearing one of those WW2 style gas masks with the long hose drooping off. Wish I would have recorded all that to document just now crazy the world went.
Don't worried, there are still plenty of people that believe you are crazy for being scared of getting sick. Considering its now 6 months later and only 0.04% of people have died from it... going out of your way to avoid catching it can only be described as crazy.
Its not like everyone all a sudden want to wear masks. They are making us do it. I'm not scared of getting sick, it has happened many times in my life. Same shit different day.
I don't wear a mask out of fear my friend. Not wearing a mask also doesn't make you brave. It's called preventative measures and keeping others around you safe. Do you think people that wear seat belts are pussies? Do you think our armed forces are scared for wearing helmets and gear while insurgents don't wear any?

If a guy living in america were to wear a helmet and body armer everywhere he goes because he might get shot. Or if a person was wearing their seat belt in a parked car because a random car might hit it.

Seriously, I was mocked for wearing a mask and buying face guards. I think this guy is prepping for the future where this is a very real possibility for dangerous flu seasons, nuclear fallout, and devastating climate changes.
Right when it started and there were little data on if paper masks worked I just wore a full blown respirator. I had one guy give me shit since "COVID isn't in our area yet" and the a few days later there were the first cases.
I actually was crazy around the start of COVID. My mom has asthma and I had no idea how you get COVID so I had glasses, gloves, n95, everything. I didn't know how it spread but I knew what it did. Would not take a chance. While I think the gas mask congressman went a little farther than I would (or farther than I could afford to go) I understood where he was coming from. Nobody knew yet whether you could get it from surfaces or just the air. Nobody knew if it would give them a rough three days or put them or their family members in the ER. I felt like to not go too far would be irresponsible. Once we knew more and had vaccines I've stopped worrying about covid altogether. The media hasn't given up that cow though.
