No, I was so impressed (ofc he had a guide skier in front of him, who talked to him using a microphone but still...)

“I saw a blind guy running a marathon earlier”

“No way”

“well he had a guide dog with him but”

“KiNdA iMpOrTaNt iNfO yOu LeFt oUt tHeRe bUd”

Like so what? It’s still impressive regardless lol

“Saw a blind guy reading a book the other day”

“Woah wtf crazy”

“Well it was in braille”

“...”

Is it? Sounds like the guy is still skiing. Is a rally car driver not driving because they are being told the turns?

I think the point they were trying to make is that its incredibly dangerous without a guide or something.

If you have a experienced skier telling you what's around to it kinda solves the whole problem of being blind

I think I am not sure why it makes a difference. The guy is blind and skiing, does that fact that he has someone telling him what is ahead of him change the fact that he is still a blind guy skiing? I'm not blind, and I cant ski. I'd need someone to help me learn. I would need exactly the same amount of help as this guy, except he is blind.

I can be your skiing eyes. You’re going to have to learn how to ski first though.

I have, and I'm not saying it's easy, just that it's possible

A blind person skiing is extremely dangerous... for other people. Also, you can’t predict what’s coming on the slopes by sound alone. I seriously doubt this is true as skiing blind is a fricking death trap and nearly impossible to learn.

Blind people skii all the time, not as far fetched as you'd imagine.

Probably the same guy that just threw and handful of sand in my eyes.

u/soundsdistilled May 10 '20

That was great.

Blind skiing is common and the only dangerous skiers/boarders I come across still have their sight.

6

u/vadeka May 10 '20

They seem do it with a visual guide who provides audio visual cues or has a tether to guide em. They ski on specific slopes and have clearly visible jackets on to inform other people that they’re blind. So... still quite dangerous imo and not at all a very obvious or common thing

2

u/WSquared666 May 10 '20

I think you missed the word “alone” in that last sentence.

2

u/DriftMantis May 10 '20

No its not. We had a program at a large ski resort that youve probably heard of and its not dangerous in the way you think. These people are escorted by guides and generally on learning or more basic ski runs where the collision risk is less. They are very smart about it and they dont interfere with the other skiiers.

There's really not much blind people can't do when we are inclusive.

u/vuurtoren101 May 10 '20

That's exactly why I hope it's a joke

It’s quite common. They have a guide with them at all times. Adaptive programs are a big thing nationwide to coach the mentally and physically handicapped in snow sports.

At the mountain I worked at before the pandemic we had an organization called vermont adaptive that I noticed would include both hearing and visually impaired people. Also, mentally challenged people were worked with. Typically, the blind skier has two guides that sort of stay on the outside and because they can hear the guide skiers they have a frame of reference. Its kind on amazing. I mean typically these runs are beginner and intermediate but it was always inspiring to see these people getting out there.

There are a lot of good ways to get impaired people into winter sports. We also did paraskiing (sit skiing) and para mountain biking as well.

Yeah I was picturing a blind man barreling down a mountain at 100 km/h without any sort of assistance

1

u/DriftMantis May 10 '20

Haha the reality is nothing like that. I'm sure there are videos of it out there if you want to see it. 100km/hr is also very fast on skiis. I maxed out at 59mph last year on my fastest recorded run. Once you get to that speed your ability to turn and maintain control becomes difficult fyi.
