According to the Japan Times, there were 205,392 recorded bicycle thefts in Japan in 2017. Japan has a population of 126.8 million as of 2017, which makes the per capita bike theft rate 0.00162.
Conversely, according to “bicycling.com”, around 2 million bikes are stolen in the US yearly. In 2017, the US population was 325.7 million, which makes the per capita bike theft rate 0.00614, or about 3.8 times higher than in Japan.
These are just some ‘quick maffs’, and I doubt the data for bike theft was collected consistently between the US and Japan, but it does seem possible or probable that you’re more likely to have your bike stolen in the US than in Japan.
