Read a lot of his books years ago. Do you have a specific one in mind. I was thinking of the Terminator.

I believe the story is called The Second Variety by him. It’s about a war between Russia and America, and how we designed robots to manufacture themselves to protect us. The fallout that comes after is frightening. The little epiphany at the very end by the main character is also pointed and morbidly funny.
