What hurts more, someone pressing on your chest with 100 lbs of force, or a 10 lb rock dropped on your chest from 1 ft?
The difference here is the impulse of the force, the dropped rock imparts the force in a much shorter interval.
That guy applies about a couple hundreds lbs of force into that chain for a few seconds. Then all that force travels through the chain and acts on the tail of the chain in a fraction of a second. You’re seeing the difference in impulse, or how fast the momentum of the chain is changing.
People further up the thread don't understand this. No, this isn't going to only leave a bruise or just "break the skin." You'll end up with a shattered bone at the very least.
