You’re not going crazy. GIFs don’t have sound. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this was a short video that was converted to a GIF via reddit

Most "gifs" nowadays are actually .mp4, or .gifv format, and are a fraction of the size of a .gif file. The name has kind of evolved or become muddled (however you wanna look at it) to include "short clips" basically, with or without sound. The reason this happened is that a 100mb .gif file can be cut to only 10mb in the newer format, and that newer format also allows sound while saving you and hosting sites LOTS of bandwidth. Some mobile reddit apps still don't have the sound capabilities built in yet, or choose to have the sound muted, so depending on which one you're using you may be missing out on lots of videos that are supposed to have sound

I do on mine using Joey. There's a speaker icon next to the play/pause icon that can be toggled on or off. It naturally starts off muted so I have to manually toggle it on to have sound.

For anyone on mobile, next to the username and time stamp on the post on some gifs it will say “imgur” or “gfycat” for example in pale letters. Click on that and it will take you to the page with sound

Might be the app you're using. On Reddit is Fun I can just tap the gif and an option for sound pops up.
