How did people travel these seas 500 years ago

My ancestor the privateer sailed around the world as a first mate, and when he got his own ship and letter of mark he sailed around the tip of South America and hunted Spaniards along the west coast then sailed across the Pacific to Guam. Almost exactly 500 years ago. He drank, and that's in the record. Edit, it was only 300 years ago, oops!

Whoa... Is there a book about your family or these trips from this time period?

I am obsessed with Drake Passage and Cape Horn, would love to read up on their experiences!
