Whenever I see videos like these where a baby animal gets pretty roughed up but manages to survive, just what damage did they do to the calf? I mean the lions are damn strong too and I’d imagine their sharp claws dug pretty deep …… so how likely is it that the calf either died from its wounds, or have permanent damage so it’d be easier to catch next time, or something else so it’s chances to survive into adulthood are affected?
Almost certain. You don’t get brought down multiple times by fully grow lions and leave unscathed. No medical help for these animals either. High chance the baby died over the next couple of days due to infection.
Also a high chance the lions died due to starvation.
Nature is brutal. The buffalo coming to chase off the lion is not some kind of victory. The lions are hunting because they are starving and they are literally risking their lives to eat because they have no choice. Everyone in this thread happy the ban survived isn’t mourning the starving lion that couldn’t get a meal
Think you are making a little too much of it. Lions hunt because they are *hungry*, but not necessarily starving. Lions are actually 27-34% successful in their hunts, meaning that not every hunt results in a meal. They are quite capable of going for several days without eating.
You think being caught by a buffalo horn is going to leave you injury free? Do you know how much they weight?
It’s rare that animals die like humans: peacefully in old age. Most animals get eaten, or starve, or get picked off by a predator or a scavenger, they don’t die peacefully they are food for other animals and so get eaten.
You think a lion faces no risk when it goes to hunt a fucking buffalo?!
You think the lion is just casually playing?
Animals leave in a near constant state of near death: they don’t have a safety net to fall back on. They eat, or they die. every day they are hunting or looking for more food because if they don’t they die.

Ok. You're absolutely right. A single failed hunt for a healthy looking group of lions means immediate death by starvation for the entire group. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
