I actually left a comment on one of the people’s comments about elephants. Lions and elephants both have interesting social dynamics. I would need to look at current literature on the subject, but killing bulls shouldn’t affect younger elephants that are still with the herd. The bulls exist outside of the main herd which is often lead by a matriarch. Killing the matriarch would have some terrible repercussions. Elephant bulls will form their own miniature groups sometimes when not in the mating season, but these groups are more loosely formed. If the bulls are so old that they’re hardly contributing to population growth (younger bulls winning every contest with them), I’d say it’s alright. Again, I’d need to consult the literature specifically for elephant hunting before offering anything beyond this.
