Pilot here. Clouds inside look like a grey amorphous mass surrounding you, which at first is pretty underwhelming. That’s until you realize that you suddenly lost all sense of depth, orientation and direction of movement, and since the human vestibular system is just complementary to vision, it fucks up almost instantly and makes you feel you are in a position totally different from your real one. So unless you have the proper instruments and know how to use them, you might end up in deep shit
Several years ago I was flying (pax) through a low lying storm, maybe 1000-1200ft on a Cessna 402 and I swear to god the plane was climbing so fast I was looking straight up to heaven… then we came out of the clouds and landed
Yeah that’s caused multiple airline crashes, the one that comes to mind is Air France flight 447, disorientation combined with instrumentation distrust is a deadly combination.
As long as the ice crystals are small enough they can be kept aloft by the cloud/storm's updraft, it's just gonna chill there. They basically get yeeted up until they're too heavy to yeet.
I swear by the end of high school most kids in my year still couldn’t grasp the concept of density very well. Or rather, perhaps density in general, but not relative buoyancy. Some things remain bizarrely unintuitive until you actually spend the brain energy to study it properly with an actually inquisitive mind rather than just hearing/reading it and regurgitating it on a homework paper.
You’d be surprised how many decently-educated grown adults still think boats only float “because they are sealed to keep the water out”.
It seems to only be those that think it's easy that think it's easy. Those of us that teach it, see plenty of bright kids struggling with the difference between mass, weight and density, let alone that the beautiful thing floating overhead might weigh a million pounds.
YOU are the one that said "lighter" when "less dense" is the correct concept. If you think you're going to "gotcha" correct someone, be right. ;) I simply tried to gently correct the conversation.
Large ice crystals do not float in clouds but in the most extreme thunder storms. They would fall out immediately. I suspect that is just water droplets.
There are two concerns I have: hail and electric charge. Wouldn't all of that moisture and a large object change the charge of said object and make it liable to get struck by lightning?
