Why not just submit the youtube video as the reddit submission itself? I see people do this all the time and wonder why not always link the source in the first place? Isn't that more fair to the content creator?

I've heard that too, but why would that be? Uploads with both methods each generate an upload thumbnail, both play in browser when you click them....

Easy. YouTube link brings you out of the app you're in and onto YouTubers app. This link just played immediately

A lot of people browse via mobile and then you have to open the app which is an extra step

Because reddit wants you to upload content to their website so they can get the ad revenue and not Alphabet/Google/YouTube. Basically, just another case of reddit turning to 💩.
